It is said to be in exelent condition....is 5.7k worth it for a 91 GXL???

Aesop Rock 08-28-04 07:16 PM

i traveled half that for an FC that was 500 hundred dollars......but if the fc was in good shape and was a TII i would

hondahater 08-28-04 07:24 PM

I woudn't spend that on an n/a fc even if it is s5 but thats just me. I really prefer forced induction. Some guys would and some guys wouldn't. Of course I bought my tII with 40k miles on the jspec engine however it had like 140k on the meter with bad interior and other major flaws for 5,900. I was young dumb and full of ...... Nevermind :) Anyways knew then what I know now I would have saved and got a third gen or a better second gen TII.

FD_dave 08-28-04 07:28 PM

that's way too expensive for a GXL. if it's an S5 TII then it's a decent deal

No such thing as a 91 GXL

The Spyder 08-28-04 07:45 PM

I drove 700 miles to get my 87 TII with 63k. I paid $1100 with a bad turbo, and a few paint blemishes.

ilike2eatricers 08-29-04 03:20 PM

About a year ago I sold my 91 NA with 74k on it for close to $5000.

Rx-7Addict 08-29-04 04:59 PM

300 miles is nothing...

FCs are quite rare, especially really nice ones

Jodoolin 08-29-04 06:26 PM

Get a better idea of value by searching on Kellybluebook, Edmonds. and NADA private sale estimates. That'a a start but will give you an idea of approx what insurance coverage will be to replace. Not great wisdom here, but any car is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

Example. I just sold my '90 GXL with 115,000K for 2,500 outstanding condition other than a $550 rear fender ding. At same time bought a '90 vert with 49K on chassis, 2,800 on Atkins re-build in absolute new mint condition for 4,400. Verts draw a premium.

Spending nearly 6K sounds a bit extreme. But, again, only worth what someone is willing to pay.

The real question, is it worth it to you?

Case in point, myself. I just bought my '88 GXL with 28K original miles on it, for just under $5K. Plus, I drove a round trip of 1200 miles to get it and bring it back. Would I have done this for just any car. No. The reason I shelled out money for this car, is because it is identical to a car that I owned back in the late 80's early 90's. A car that I sold and have regreted ever since. I have searched for 2 years, to find a car identical to the one I sold years ago. I found this one, with low miles on it. At that point, it didn't matter what KBB said about the worth of the car. It was worth more to me. To have a car, identical to a car that held alot of memories for me, was as the commercial says "Priceless"

I can tell you right now, that KBB is only going to put a worth of $3500 on the high end.

So, is it worth it to you?

FD_dave 08-29-04 07:22 PM

that's a very good point. even w/ FC's blue book values aren't all that useful, 'cuz of their rarity and cult status. if it's a car that speaks to you that you've always wanted, then you're the judge whether it's worth it or not. and 300 miles really isn't THAT far

thevanillaninja6 08-29-04 09:03 PM

I hate traveling for anything but 300 miles isn't bad.. trust me when you get it, it's going to be worth it

n4ji 08-29-04 09:11 PM

I drove 1600 miles round trip to get my AE. That was a fun drive back.

TURBO FC 08-29-04 10:08 PM

i drove from about miami to tampa(central west coast of fl.) to pick a non running tII for $500

alwayssideways 08-29-04 11:14 PM

im flying to michigan to get my fc. i think its about a 900 mile trip back home . but its a great deal that i cant pass up

hIGGI 08-30-04 02:35 AM

distance does not matter if u know what u want

wpgrexx 08-30-04 09:25 AM

if you really want it go get it. I have driven 11 hours each direction just to pick up a motor, let alone a car.

rat39 08-30-04 09:48 AM

Distance does not matter. If you want it get it, try to get the price lowered though IMO. Just as a reference, I bought my AE 3.5 years ago with 51K original miles and NO problems, including paint, for $6500. Which was KBB retail value.

But if you like/love the car...do what you want...you do not have to tell anyone.

FD_dave 08-30-04 12:03 PM

AE? a hachiroku?

thevanillaninja6 08-30-04 09:41 PM

next weekend I'm traveling 4 hours each way to get a non-running karmann ghia for $800.. into the backwoods of alabama (scary!)

rotarygod 08-31-04 03:12 AM

My friend has a red '89 T-II with 53K miles on it. It is in near mint condition. He has added Tokico Illuminas, Eibach springs, rear toe eliminators, a boost controller, and a turbo timer. I am about to pick it up for for $5K.

Me too...Hell, I was ready to drive out to Texas from NJ if I needed to. If its the right car for you, its definitely worth the trip. Just ask a lot of questions before you go, so you have a good idea what you're in for (if the owner is honest).

Personally, I think that is way too much for an N/A. I would pay $5000+ for a MINT TII, but definitely not for an N/A. But as I said, if its worth it to you, go for it. Good luck. :bigthumb:
