Would you buy a "Service DVD" (video howtos)?
I'm pondering putting together a DVD of "service howtos" for 2nd gen '7s, starting with NA types (because that's what I have laying around).
It would cover the basics of maintenance/repair on these cars - topics I was thinking of including: Oil/filter change Coolant flush Accessory belts Alternator replacement Oil pump replacement Water pump replacement Axle replacement Brake work Tuneups (plugs/wires) Pulsation damper Unflooding And other assorted things as needed, potentially having a "beginner" and "advanced" set. I'd be selling these for somewhere in the $20 range. I might also have a downloadable version or something (buy access, get the videos as needed). Is this something people would buy? I know FC people are as a rule broke, so it's a good crowd to pitch to. My thought is that many people learn better by watching, and I think it would become clear just how simple things can be if you've got a DVD to watch of the process. Thoughts? Suggestions? -=Russ=- |
Would be good for the newbs

Depending on the price, I'd buy it.
I'd really prefer just a service manual that has better, more "in depth" pictures. I hate how the kragen-autozone brand books don't really depict shit very well. I'm a noob to a lot of things on cars still, and when I'm tackling a certain job for the first time, I makes things a lot easier if I can SEE how it's done, not have it worded out for me. An online service manual with plenty of photos I say. Although I guess the FSM kind of already takes care of that, lol. You have my vote for the video though. I just think it's easer to quickly reference out of a book, cause you can have it right there. Or a laptop in my garage. But I guess a well designed menu screen would be the same thing as the index in a book. So yeah. |

I think it would be very helpful to the new guys. And especially to those that aren't very mechanically inclined.

That's what I'm thinking. Also, I like the idea of a good printed reference along with the DVD - I didn't think of that. -=Russ=- |
Its a good idea, but I get the feeling that 80% of the guys on the forum already know how to do all that stuff (I do). But for someone that's new to the car it'd be a good thing, you might wanna throw in stuff that new RX owners should know, like pre-mixing/ which oil to use/ why my wipers and horn down work etc. Pretty much all the stuff in the stickys.

Something to add, since you're targeting N/A's at first - Checking and/or repairing the 5th/6th ports and VDI for s5's.
I'd actually be interested in this. Sure I can already do most of it, but there always seems to be one tiny step I have trouble with... I'm not very mechanically inclined. |
Yeah i would probably be interested as well, if you do one for the turbos, speaking of which does anyone know of a good service manual that i can get offline (mines a j-spec) cause all the stuff i got with my car is in japanese.

I like the idea and would def. be in to buy one
