would this work to replace the exaust?

i was just wondering. the exaust is pretty heavy. in wondering of ways to lighten the car, think this would work? say you get a header, cut off the flange, and clamp this hose off each pipe, and run it to the rear, then clamp a decent looking tip and hang/bolt the tip up? as long as you secured everything, this material should hold up to the heat. it's rated 2000 degrees +, and can come in 3 inch dia. just wondering |

I think you would get a very muffled sound coming from the exhaust, even without a muffler. Think of all the crevices and ridges a cloth like material has, and when sound constantly bounces off those, instead of a straight line it gets muffled, AKA the muffler. I'm sure it would work fine for a little while, but i think it would deteriorate very quickly.

Even if it worked, that's ridiculous! And it does look like it would deteriorate pretty quickly underneath a car. |

OK, teasing aside, the reason why it would not work well is because the exhaust pulses would make that tubing thrash around like a fire hose, and I'm not sure if it would even take the punishment of constant exhaust pulses. You could install a metal hangar/former every 2-3 inches, or encase it inside a forming tube, but that would negate the weight savings. Also, I don't think that thin-wall tubing will attenuate the noise very well.
The more common material for expensive lightweight exhaust systems is titanium, which is about 45% lighter than mild steel. I have quite a bit of money in my car, but I just went with a nice custom 321 stainless steel exhaust made by JB Import Automotive Repair over in St. Petersburg. I like 321 stainless because it is good at taking the high heat of the rotary engine, and it is excellent at resisting corrosion. For me, it was not worth spending an extra money on titanium just to save 35 pounds, but you may want to consider that if you are more concerned about vehicle weight than you are about money. |

Or you could use a FD alum spare, it weights about half of the steel wheel.
