would the stock TMIC be relibable for 300HP

ok...as the title stated.....would the stock TMIC be reliable enough for 300HP(~10-12psi)....i'll running zerobanger's misting setup as well as autospeed's IC misting cooler.....is this doable or should i just scrap the idea and follow everone else and get a FMIC?....im asking this because i'd hate to ditch the cool lookin T2 hood...it makes the 7 meaner....

1987RX7guy 08-21-04 09:46 PM

IMO no.

APEXDRIFT 08-21-04 09:49 PM

you can do the fromt mount but you dont have to lose the hood scoop!

im setting up the misting system as well it will create more efficent boost which will as efficient as putting in a front mount... at least thats what i hear!

torean 08-21-04 10:23 PM

ohh man...but without the TMIC..what good is the scoop?.....it just sits there.....how bout running both FM and TM?...

gergrx7 08-21-04 11:04 PM

no you cant have a FMIC adn a TMIC. adn with 300hp oyu need a FMIC adn youll jsut haev lto leave teh scoop there, or get an na hood. some people ahev made the scoop adn functional vent toget hot air out of engine bay.

torean 08-21-04 11:23 PM

how bout mounting a tranny cooler there?.........yes...i must be high or something...

gergrx7 08-21-04 11:24 PM

tranny coolers are for autos

How can an intercooler be unreliable? If you mean with the engine be unrelaible then that will depend on many other factors, like tuning and how effective your IC spray nozzles are. A FMIC is a still a much better idea. The IC spray will be fighting a constant losing battle with the heat rising though the core and out the scoop (which acts like a chimney when stopped or crawling). Cooler air means more power for the same boost or the same power from less boost.

That's a ridiculous reason to use a TMIC. Just leave the hood as it is and forget about it.

SDrotary-FC 08-23-04 11:29 AM

i've seen 269rwhp on a TMIC

Wankel7 08-23-04 11:34 AM

Maybe with the Autospeed IC sprayer and an Aquamist water injection system:)

After I finish a 1/4 run my intake temps are a little over 80°C However, by the time I coast to a crawl to head back to the staging area....it drops down to about 30°C

Don't ditch the hood, just put a piece of screen over the hole where the IC used to sit so that dead bugs, leaves and what not don't get plastered on you UIM.

Yes I believe that someone got upper 260's RWHP on a BNR Stage II and the stock TMIC.

Peak power's not the issue. You can get 300hp with no intercooler if you want. The point is it's not very smart...

rotarysc 08-24-04 07:23 AM

I have near 300rwhp 10psi, T04b/T3 S5 hybrid turbo, and a Haltech... I see 150 intake temps on a hot day autox or putting in traffic.... I am putting the zerobanger H2O inject kit on here really soon. If you only run 10-12psi you'll be ok if your smart about hot days and racing hard. I'm trying to stay as far away from a FMIC as possible, they create other problems that I don't want anything to do with.

Bukwild 08-24-04 09:00 AM

shit you can boost all day on a fmic and it will be cool to the touch. Try touching your top mount after boost around all day. you don't have to have a giant fmic for it to be effective.
Just pick up one of those long skinny ones on ebay for 200 bucks. Then it will give you better cooling and not completely block the rad so you can still run a efan on the highway.

how did they make the scoop to vent air?

torean 08-24-04 12:12 PM

i like to know as well........yeah...autospeed IC cooler and aquamist system are in the plans to make a reliable 300HP for a daily driver using the TMIC.....

Cybaster 08-24-04 02:18 PM

well, if u like the little "wheeeeee" noise from the hood scoop when u use a FMIC then i say keep the scoop....
my friend told me to block it with carboard or aluminum plates to eliminate the sound..... i have the scoop as it is right now when using my FMIC.....

but that noise (if u do hear it) can get to u at times....

i would like to know how to vent the air as well.... better than having a open slot to collect dirt and all that other crap on my engine right now....

So true...I'm guilty of this one myself. Lets just say that I learned that you can boost 8 psi with a half-bridge & 60-1 turbo in 90 degree ambient weather under extreme conditions with the stock TMIC and it won't hurt the engine. I had a track day to go to, at the time the engine was considered "disposable", and we had a 50/50 mix of 91 & 100 octane gas available. The car was run for 4 sessions of 20 minutes each, with rpms ranging from no lower than 6K and no higher than 8500, WOT at least 60% of the time.

I'm not bragging about this, it was probably on the negligent side but the motor was "disposable" at that time. As for the longevity of the engine, it stills runs flawlessly, now hitting 15 psi with the proper FMIC. :) Its interesting what these engines can really take...

Not sure if this would be considered off-topic for the thread, but could you elaborate on the problems?
