is it worth it to install a air intake in place of the stock one?
 

whats the difference? how much does it effect? overall what do you all think?

If you have problems finding replacement filters like I did, yes. Unfortunately, unless you build a heat shield, you might be loosing as much as 5HP, as stated by numerous people on this forum. This is because you're sucking in hot air from the engine bay, instead of cold air from outside. I like mine though, and plan on building a heat shield in the near future.

I threw on a cone filter because it was the only filter I had at home that would work on this car. Previous owner had been driving without a filter! And he worked at an auto repair shop :o.

Well, I just installed a Apexi on my S5TII. Had it on for a weekend just to do some tests. It boosted 10/11 (3rd) with the stock intake and 10/11 (3rd) with the Apexi. No increase in boost seen, but a lot of noise from the incoming air. Pulled it back off and put the stock on.

I'm not bitter it is just a waste of forum space to ask shit like this. On a side note you are just as much of a noob as I.

I did lots of upgrades to my car to make it a better autocrosser...shocks, sway bar, flywheel, braded lines, racing radiator, electric fan, plugs/wires, I even took out all the motors and crap to make the vert top go up and down, but for some reason, I never messed with upgrading the intake.

Floppy, my point is that we've all been given the usless one word reply "SEARCH." And because of it, we've all made the same usless one word post. The thread has already been started, May as well make it usefull and give up some information. I'll admit that I should have also suggested that a search before starting a new thread will get you the information in most cases.

BTW, I've got 166 posts more than you, and none of them just say "SEARCH" NOOB!:D

I think a cone filter can help a little bit, but I would difinatly suggest building a heatshield for it that has a duct directing cold non engine bay air into it, cuz the stock setup at least gets cold air into the stock airbox.
And STFU with the NOOB bull shit, ur post count has nothing to do with how much you know about this shit.

if you make a cold air intake make sure it's either routed out of the engine bay, or you have an air box with a tube from outside the engine bay in a high pressure area to feed the cold air box.

I hate when I search and I find someone with the exact problem I had and the only response is search. It's not very helpful in the long run.

I ordered a drop-in K&N filter from Mazdatrix on Monday and it came today. just installed it, but haven't really tested it out yet. It feels so good to do your own work....even if it's a minor job, it just feels good.

It doesnt feel that great to me. I just cant stand to pay somebody to do something I can do myself.

Unless you also make a cold air box to go around your new filter, then it's pointless. Sucking in hot engine bay heat is just going to cost you power.

how would you go about making a new cold air box and or heatshield ? i just got a k&n filter with maf adapter but im not going to install it if its going to cause me to lose hp from hot air, i also have a k&n filter for the stock airbox but the stock airbox seems very restrictive... i want to make more hp than stock but not with the stock restrictive setup

I coulda swore that I saw someone who makes one. But most people make the cold air box themselves. Just make a cardboard template to start with. There's a whole thread on the subject. It might even be in the archives.

It's really not hard. Just make a box out of sheetmetal that surrounds the filter. Make a hinged lid so you can access the filter. Then route cold air into the box either via a pipe, or just cut a hole in the fender.

i have an apexi cone filter on my 89 GTU. i left the snorkle on, and that seems to help direct some cooler air to my intake. im in the process of building a fresh-air headlight(might help some, looks cool, costs nothing :bigthumb: )and im considering how to build a decent heat shield.

Unless you have as an ecu i woudn't worry about a new air intake. i have a K&N insert and i noticed a reasonable amount of throttle response. not muchh of a horse power gain but more than none. Cold air intake makes a difference only when you do ecu, and injectors. dont worry about porting it either wait till you get a rebuild kit to do that. if you want to be a badass go with a 20b for $7k

I dunno how effective it will be but my filter came with a plastic shield and attached tubing to run an inlet into the front bumper. Im still gonna build a metal airbox around it though.

Anyone here make an airbox set up for the FC? I'm too lazy to make one and lack the skills required.

After reading this thread, i just made a heat shield for my "hot air" intake, and it made a big difference. A lot more power now. I used the stock air collector for fresh air
