Worn Oil Seal
 
I own a 86 rx7 and everytime i start the car after it sits for a long period of time could be about a work day it smokes when i start it. Does anyone know how to fix this without rebuilding the whole engine. The car runs great otherwise. :confused:

what color is the smoke?

If it's blue smoke I would not worry to much about it. It's prolly just a tired motor. Someday it will need a rebuild,, but for now you just have to live with it. If its white smoke your pretty fugged, and that rebuild is closer than you think. If it is black smoke start with a tune up.. running to rich for some reason, or choking to much at start up.

blue smoke should = worrying bc you don't want to check the oil in the car every other day. Make sure the OMP is configured correctly and if you are sure it's the oil control rings put in a bottle or 2 (depending on how bad it is) of STP stop smoke (commonly called motor honey here bc its really just VERY thick oil). This stuff will create a cushion between the worn areas of the ring and essentially restore the seal. This isn't a fix but it really works...the only real fix is a rebuild but you can keep driving like this and re-gain normal oil consumpttion depending on how bad the seal is. When my first NA motor blew (lots of timing advance = poor tuning = inexperience) I picked up a replacement motor from a local rotary tuner for pocket change. The motor had perfect (like a brand new motor) compression but the oil control rings were worn. I was smoking like crazy during driving and they told me to start running 20W50 oil (a good idea in any rotary for the summer) and pour in a bottle of this motor honey then drive a full tank of gas pretty leisurely. After about a week the car wasn't smoking at ALL and pretty normal oil mileage returned (800 to a quart, regular to hard driving). I would simply add some at each oil change and I've been running this way for about 4 years on this motor. Perhaps my rings were just brittle from sitting bc this engine wasn't run for a while...you may not have the same luck but it's worth a shot.
