will a Vicous lsd last forever?

Hows it goin everyone? i wanted to ask if the viscous lsd is maintained( always changing fluid after every so many miles will these last for a decent amount of time or is the actual vicous part sealed and when it gos bad then the entire lsd is junk? i heard that it is sealed off but i also heard you can change fluid weight and change how it reacts also

I googled for a good explanation for you, and found this thread. There's a pretty good explanation of Mazda VLSDs here: http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=360565.

Also, Lance Shall appears to be the Aaron Cake of Miatas. :D.

The viscous unit itself is sealed and cannot be serviced. Changing the fluid in the rear end doesn't change the viscous coupling.

For what it's worth, the viscous in my 178,000 mile GTUs still works really well, from the standpoint that it's never given me any one-tire-fire.

^^ yep.

when it goes boom, either get another one from another car/buy a new one(do they still sell it?)/go other kinds of LSD.

Viscous unit is pretty durable ---- assume you don't beat the crap outa it and change it's oil often.

this thread makes me wonder, can I fit a Torsen from say, an RX-8. and Frankenstein it to fit it into the 2nd gen, I know I know there are other options. just a thought.

What's the application? S5 T2? Is this for drag racing?

The Miata torsen (7" ring gear only) can be swapped into the N/A FC.
