Why I love the 2nd-Gens!
While our cars get dissed as either being overweight GT's, or the most generic of the '7s, I feel that they have many redeeming qualities. Feel free to post your own!
1. The variety! We have so many different and interesting trim levels and hell, it's even interesting to see which model didn't get an aluminum hood or a steel one. 2. Bang for The Buck! The 1st gens are a bit too slow (sometimes!) and the 3rd Gens are sometimes a bit too troublesome. If you want raw power, get a TII and a few mods and you're running damn quick times. If you want to carve corners like a badass...any model will do! The performance potential versus cost of these cars are extremely high! 3. The look! I swear, nothing looks better than an 89-91 GTUs or TII with clean paint and it's tail-lights on. Even the 86-88's are great looking, just slap a different set of wheels on there and you're ready to go. I love the interior of these cars, everything's in it's right place and at night it looks the cockpit to a fighter jet. You guys post yours! |

that is the same thing i tell everybody. except I add that I have driven all three generations and the only one I fell in love with was my 88. GEn 1 was too sloppy and not as well laid out inside. underpowered. and it had 13" wheels for fuck sake. Gen 3 was better, faster, kinda sexy looking. but they haddled worse than the G2. they were heavier. and all out bigger, furthermore, I didn't feel at home at the wheel. No doubt the bang for the buck and the right astetics. FC3S all the way. |

My father bought an 86 GXL (or something) brand new. I LOVED that car, even if he did make me ride in the back under the hatch sometimes. : ( Cost/Benefit analysis put the Second Gen at the top of my list as well. Lotsa power, cheap to buy, reliable (when maintained), sexy, a handling dream. |
Today I was studying for exams at my dad's house and my TII was parked outside on the street. Every so often when I'd take a smoke break I'd look outside and see her freshly waxed body and just want to quit studying and go for a drive. Gawd...it was hard resisting that temptation. :D

Gen 3 was better, faster, kinda sexy looking. but they haddled worse than the G2. Now take a second gen TII and spend what you would've spent on a stock 3rd gen and yes it will handle, accelerate, etc. just as good. |

The reason I don't have one is because the 3rd gen is built so poorly. All the plastic is CHEAP, everything on the car breaks... too much BS for me. |
I took a beat-up second gen N/A autocrossing this year and finished at the top of my class and third in the Rookie standings (behind a trailer car and a tweeked out Camaro). I fell in love with the second gen when I was at the Mazda dealer with my dad getting a great deal on a GLC.
Looks, handling, reliabilty, and the "Tim Taylor fun-to-work-on" factor make this a great car. When I actually get the "Flying Buzzsaw" working right, the fun-to-drive factor makes up for all the work needed. |

its on that site somewhere or another :) yup, the 2nd gens rock :) i have a 1st gen but never driven it so i dont know about it, and the 3rd gens i am sure are pretty damn good. i like my 2nd gen overall except the damn suspension the stupid woman before me put on it, its a cruiser suspension, it bounces all over the place when i race, but i can still corner pretty good, at over 100mph it starts floating so it must be changed soon :) when i get done with my FC ill never need another car :) its gonna have the Bomex kit with a knightsport wing, platinum frost paint, and a 270hp street port engine with my 5.12 gears :) every suspension mod imaginable and 17x8" volk TE 37's :) |

Wow, I can probably go on and on about this...I'll just jot down some impressions about my 1989 GTUs.... 1. Looks: I love the front end of my car. The front airdam stock is hella good looking, a forerunner to all the nasty combat kits you see today. I actually LIKE the FTP's, I think they look cool and original. Ahhh...the tailights. The 1989-1991 Mazda RX-7 tailights are the best ever. No one can convince me otherwise. I love 'em. All in all, I love the way my car looks bone stock. I don't desire any body kit or GT wings, etc. Wait until I possibly get some white 17" Volks Racing SE37K's in white on my ride... 2. Handling: The car handles. I haven't driven lots of RWD cars, but this RX-7 is very kind at the limit. I can push it, and it really doesn't have any bad habits. The DTSS has probably saved my ass a few times. All I've done to the car is throw some decent rubber on the stock tires and it'll dust most of the cars out there. Wait until I get some new shocks/springs... 3. Braking: 4 piston aluminum calipers. Enough said. 4. Motor: Words do not do the normally aspirated 13B justice. It just pulls and pulls, with nary a vibration. Just an almost electric motor-esque sensation. Too cool. Add a 8000+ redline and flames, and you've got a winner. 5. Interior: Fighter cockpit. No fat, just what you need. Throw that all in a bag, and you've got a 2800lb sportscar that starts every time, will rev past 8000rpm ALL DAY LONG, and burble happily down to the grocery store. I wouldn't trade my GTUs for a TII or an FD. I love it. KS 1989 GTUs "Not for sale." |
i own a 2nd and 3rd gen,but the fd has way better performance,looks. the fc is much cheaper to maintain and easier on my pocket!;)

I love the look of my 88. I used to prefer the look of the 89+, but after I got it painted and everything it just nice and clean, it just looks bad ass. I love my car. It looks so agressive.
The engine is outstanding. I could just stay at redline and the engine would feel at home. The cars revs so free, quick and happy it that sometimes I just like to rev it at a stop light. The sound is amazing. Nothing sounds like a rotary. It's got that signature sound to it and it's deep and mellow. Again, sometimes I just like to rev it. ;) Handling. This is a very confidence inspiring car. take it to the limit and says "can I have some more?". Performance. The N/A is a great performer. I have spent about $50 total in mods(currently on the car anyway) and have put 20 more horsepower to the wheels than stock. Do that with another car. This car has so much potential. I love it. I don't have the vocabulary to accurately describe my feelings for the FC. It's a wonderful driving experience. Everyone that has driven my car says the same thing, "Wow, I can definitly understand why you like this car." And they say it with a grin that doesn't fade. FC. True Driving Excitement. |
absolutely inspirational driving, see a corner you get anxious to get to it quicker an quicker, an andrenaline pumping, heart rate rising, absolutely impetuous drive, rev happy, electric smooth running engine, the ability to say 1.3litre and see the oh so flabbergasted look of some 5.0 or v8 driver, and most v6 drivers, a cock pit that would insprie an F/A-18 pilot, the kind of rush that you would only get in a scary movie, looking at the highway right past your hood when acceling from a corner gives it, i think, an F1 kind of feel, just to see the pavement rushing at you faster and faster from a good corner. a sound to make mozart resentful with hate, and with exhaust, a really head turning absolutely amazing sound, the looks to turns heads and cause jealousy, the smooth aerodynamics, that of bullet passing through air, almost complete nothingness, no moving in high winds, no rocking when a diesel truck flies by on the other side of the highway.
all in all, an absolutely incredible and sumptuous joy ride, the kind of kick you would only get out of a dream, and the awe inspiring sound and look to put most to shame there we go nicely put i think :D:D:D:D |
After owning or someone in my family owning every body RX7 (SA, FB,FC, FD), And I could afford a FD, I keep coming back to the FC.
Cheap, easy to work on, handles great, reasonably fast... All these things are great, but something no one else touched on... The Biggest interior!!! But its not too big like a Mk3 Supra or a Camero (not that I would ever own a Camero or any GM other than a C5 or later vette) |
This thread is making me depressed because I just sold my 2nd gen.

105-110 mph on a summer morning with the top down. Squeeze down on the gas and it pushes you back in the seat. Rock solid, no wind noise. I love this car!

I just think they are the best value in a TRUE sports car! I often smoke cars that are over triple in cost...But while my car isn't the fastest around...But it does handle better than 90% of the cars out there! For the cost/fun quota...Ya can't beat the T2! I love the 3rd Gens, and I have had 2 1st gens...But for what you get, the 2nd Gen is the best for what you pay for!

You need to compare the Turbo II 2nd gens to the 3rd gens, not the NAs. Both the TII and 3rd gens are supercars. |
Does anyone know the exact URl of the page that tells you how to get your car to pull over a 1g on the slip pad? Looked around the site listed.. and couldnt find anything....

Things I miss most about my old Turbo II...
Interior... the interior was just so damn sweet, the Supra interior just doesn't do it for me... not as well layed out Rev-happy engine... felt like it could just rev forever! the 7m-gte in the Supra just isnt as rev happy, and the 6500RPM redline is somewhat disappointing, not as smooth as the old 13B either Light weight and small size... I never really realized how light the car felt until i had driven my Supra, i can definitely tell a huge difference in weight... i dont feel as comfortable tossing the old lead sled of a Supra around. Styling... while i had the more antiquated 87 Turbo II, it still looked damn sweet, and the scoop in the hood is so aggressive. The Supra looks pretty mean, but not nearly as graceful as the RX-7, IMO. What I don't miss... The problems... i think the RX-7 was in my garage broken way more than I got to drive it... and yes, i did maintain it quite well. im just puzzled as to why the water seals let go for no apparent reason on a 25k mile Mazda rebuild. Im not worried about any of that with the Supra, as you can see in my sig there is some engine work done, and i think its pretty safe to say that ive got myself a bulletproof 7m-gte. boosting 12 psi daily with absolutely no problems at all... except my gas guage seems to go empty pretty quick ;) The lack of power... now mine was just stock, but it didnt feel very fast to me, even when it was running perfectly. had it not broken, it would have been decently modded now and a bit quicker... but just with whats done to my Supra im putting down nearly 300rwhp and even more torque. |

Not to take anything away from the 2nd gen series 5. :) Series 4 is less than the S2000. i'm with you guys...i just love the FC's. and i FINALLY got my Turbo II a few months back...i'm sad cause i'm keeping it in storage for the winter...but come spring time i'm gonna have the boost again. honestly i did always wanna sell the n/a one day and get an FD...(before i got the T2)...but after i saw the RE amemiya 2000 kit...i had to get the T2 :D |
