Why do i have to Unflood my 86 rx7 every morning?
 

I have to go through the unflooding procedure every morning. Our nights are cold and it seems the car floods itself before it has a chance to start. Once i get it started in the morning it's fine all day. But the next morning it happens again. It's killing my battery all the time and my starter. The car has a sick lack of power, if i give her half throttle and cut the wheel she'll start to burn out, but if i floor it it bogs down. I assumed i needed spark plugs and changed them but still the same. Could it be my spark wires. I dont know what to do. I want my car to be back to doin sick ass donuts. Not to mention it'd be nice if the sucka would start.

Fuel injectors are leaking. Clean or replace them.

install a fuel pump kill switch. worked for me! just do a search for fuel pump kill switch and youll get a write up.

i was told if you put the pedal to the floor when you start it it turns off the fuel, so when i start i put the pedal to the floor for a couple turns then let off and it starts everytime even after sitting outside for 10 hours in sub zero temps. it has the same effect as installing a switch in the fuel pump i think.

yep...but that only works on 89-91's.

Install a kill switch, get the injectors cleaned, and get a tune up. That should fix your problem. How many miles on the car?

Im gonna try all your advice.

try mine first since it's free, worst that can happen is it will flood again, if that doesn't work then try the other more complex methods. i've only owned my car for a week, but january here isn't exactly a warm month and the guy that i bought it from told me it wouldn't start in the cold.

My '91 N/A sometimes spins over fast when I first try to re-start it after driving somewhere, say at work when heading out for lunch:mad:

Is this the leaky injector problem or low compression?

I have also noticed that when I start it for the first time in the morning that it does not go to 3000 RPM, it sort of stumbles around 1500 RPM until it smooths out, eventully climbing to 2500RPM, then as it warms up slowly drops to 1000 RPM.

This all seemed to start after I cleaned the throttle body and had to re-adjust the idle down after the cleaning (it was solid at 2500 RPM). Could the air bypass adjustment screw setting be wrong now and how do I return it back to the recommended setting ?

The engine is stock and has 44K miles on it.

Portwolf, do yourself a favor and check to see if your pulsation dampner screw is backed out? When this happens it restricts fuel to your primary injectors and gives the same indication of flooding. for more info research PD's or leaking fuel, there are a lot of threads for these Dampners going bad. Locate it, take the cap off and see if the screw is still in and tight. Let me know what you find. Gary

Anyone ever try spraying WD40 in the air intake on a flooded RX7? Since pouring oil in the spark plug holes works, I wonder if that would work also?

You might also check your batter. My battery wasn't enough to start the engine when it was warm and it would flood. New battery and now i don't have a problem.

My '86 GL has 210,000 miles (rebuild at 117,000), and my flooding problem has gotten pretty severe. I found that if I ALWAYS start by holding the pedal to the metal, it always starts. Cold, Hot, or inbetween. Next spring, I will pull the injectors IF my compression test comes out OK. I've read that low compression will cause flooding. Any thoughts?

same for me...floor it and then go is the best thing to do...but for me it its fine at night..but semmingly afetr a nice rain or humid day and sitting for only a few hours will flood it. No matter what the longer it stay for me the beter it usually is...

Yep the flooring can work, opens her up and allows more air in, but isnt cutting fuel like in the later mdels. Just dont pump it obviosly adds more fuel=bad.

Clean them injectors and all will be well :)
