Why do I feel so attached to my stock clarion head unit?
Well, after reading most, if not all the stereo threads on here, I've come to one conclusion, us 7heads tend to scoff a bit more than we help when it comes to aiding someones ailing sound system. I think something like
"You know you're and FC owner when it doesn't matter that the stereo doesn't work..... because you'd just turn it down to listen to the engine anyways." My problem, however, is that a car without a stereo is no car at all, it is a 1990 GXL lawnmower with power windows and a really big bunny rabbit gear (to all those guys who can't mow in turtle). My car came with a busted ass clarion stock unit which, with it's burnt out LCD's and quirks, sounds great when it is working. It fits the hole just great and even has the digital Eq., instead of the manual (even though it doesn't really work). I want a new unit in atleast the features I have now to give me that nice sound consistently to go with my new front component speakers. I tried a cheapie aftermarket with just a radio and tape deck that didnt even fill the hole, and had to use a wiring harness kit for my car. The end result... No bas and shitty sound. What should be done in this senario as the units with the digital Eq are hard to find and ones with a CD player are even harder. A)Buy an aftermarket with atleast the 100 amps that came in the Clarion and just use the wiring harness kit? B)Buy another stockie off Ebay even though it only has a manual Eq, less amps, and the person who is selling it doesn't even have an RX-7 to test it? C)Go back to the aftermarket but hand wire it instead of using the harness kit? D)Just put up with having a hoopdie system? E)Other _________________________________________ please specify Thank you fellow fans of the Wankel. |

A)Buy an aftermarket with atleast the 100 amps that came in the Clarion and just use the wiring harness kit? Don't waste your money on wiring "kits". You don't need them. Terminate the bare harness that come with the head unit using male spade terminals and plug them straight in to the car's stereo plugs. You need to bypass the amps, preferably by running new wires from the head unit to the speakers. If you still have stock speakers you should look at replacing them too. You'll need to add a realy to the antenna wire to change the switched ground to switched power.
