why cant i use "Dex-cool" coolant

Why? What will it do to my motor? Whats the difference? I havn't noticed a problem yet...

is it the orange shit? the orange stuff when its put into a "green" system will cause problems
if your car came with green from the factory use green
if it came with orange use orange

I believe I saw once that it is very bad on coolant seals. Dont quote me on that but do a search.

dex-cool and ethyl glycol = bad.

From what i read/researched and also my brother and father down gm vehicles that use dexcool i mixed both of them together (the green stuff and red stuff) and well... it starts doing funky shit, like clumping almost. Also its bad on coolant seals they eat them up or like deteriorate very quicky. A friends honda was using the green stuff, he ran low and he added a dexcool red shit and some of his hoses and stuff started to mess up, so i would stick with using whats supposed to be used. If your worried about the properties of cooling search it up, i htink ppl here have used 50/50 or 70/30 even. Also theres redline water wetter and additives like that to help.

Yes, mixing the two does bad crap. According to a few of my instructors one or two of which worked for GM you can run dex-cool in an ethyl glycol system and vice versa as long as you flush it. Why does he know this? Because Dex-cool is complete crap, it is hard on seals, gets acidic very fast, crystilyzes and all kinds of junk ( It's been 2 years since I heard all the specifics to give good details ). They advised if you ever find dex-cool in a vehicle flush it and put ethyl glycol in it unless of course you own a new GM and converting it would void the warranty in which case one of them said change the dex-cool every 6 months to a year until the warranty is up, then get rid of it. lol

Not to mention I believe mazda has service bulletins out not to run dex-cool even if you properly flush and convert over.

Just remember water wetter does not protect against freezing.

dex cool as designed for alumminum heads and block the proportys that in put in there are designed for a long life coolant it is still ethelen gloycloe with long life additives it's not recomended to mix a non long life coolant but if sysem were completely flush you would be able to use a long life coolant but i personaly stiff wouldn't use dex cool i like prestone mix with any color works great

Dex cool is "Made for Only GM Vehicles" How's that for an answer? Some things are just that way. Keep using it and someday you can come back and tell us why Dex cool insn't meant for Mazdas.

It actually has f-ed up lots of GM vehicles as well. Use it and good luck.

IIRC Dex-cool is also SUPPOSED to be less poisonous if consumed by you, your pet, and a child thinking it is gatorade. It will make you sicker than a dog, but it isnt a virtual death sentance that traditional collant is.

i work at a garage and although dex-cool can sound good to some since it lasts 5 yrs, it really isn't that good. i agree with what was previously said about damage to coolant seals, and it also does not lasts nearly as long as it should. after 5 yrs even on dex-cool specific vehicles it clumps up real bad i've even seen it turn purple b4. not something i want in my car. mopar has an extended life antifreeze called g05, its similar but supposed to be universal. this is used in chrylers, jeeps, dodges, fords adn newer mazda's like the RX-8. toyota also has a "Toyota Red" which is toyota specific but not extended life. and now honda also has some blue shit they just came out with. i would just use what is supposed to be in it.

if you must use dex cool then make sure that you completely and i mean completely flush your system. but my advise as a mechanic is to just keep mixing the old green stuff.
