Wht does it die when first started - cold

Every day. Same thing. I start it in the morning. It starts right up. Goes to about 2k for maybe a minute, then reduces rpm to about 700. If left idling for more than a minute - it dies. I start it again & give it a little r's & pull out onto the street. By the time I get out of our neighborhood. Say two minutes, it'll never do it again & runs strong. It's a '88 13B 'vert. Whatz up?
Oh yeah, we've only had it since 7/31/04. Gets 22mpg freeway. City maybe 15. City mileage might be my fault. I really like 2nd & 3rd.

Mine self revs also at start

Terrh 08-16-04 07:47 PM

mine doesn't rev when cold, it just stalls. if I rev it a few times or keep my foot on the gas for maybe 10 seconds, it will run.

it's worse when it's cold outside.

Rocket, HOLY DOODOOZ BATMAN!!! Uhhhhhh. I WANT one!!!

d7n7master 08-16-04 10:00 PM

Sooo, something must be wrong or it should continue to idle.. Should I just take it in for a check-up? I don't know dick about rx-7's (total nubie) & I don't want to find out (later) that just because I think it runs good & the temp has never even seen the middle of the guage that it's ok. Thanks again, Gary

It'll be a problem with the thermowax and/or the BAC valve.

[QUOTE=NZConvertible]It'll be a problem with the thermowax and/or the BAC valve.[/QUOTE

That's 99.9% true......but I knocked off/dislocated/unplugged my water thermo sensor plug of the back of the water pump a week ago, unknowingly, and that darn car would start in the morning but wouldn't idle til I started it again and held the pedal for several moments. Since finding the plug off and reinstalling it....no more problems.

But your problem is probably the adjustment of the thermowax/fast idle cam/timing/improper idle setting/ bac/one of the above. Free fsm online. Fuel Section is helpful.
