WHo else has an NRG short hub adapter and does it have play?

Hey Guys,
The other thread about shitty Ebay hubs made me think again about my NRG short hub.
Mine has about 1/8"-1/4" of wobble play in it. There is no straight on push or pull play, but wobbling side to side, and up and down there is. I've checked it twice, and it is tightened down. I installed it with a cordless impact. I plan on doing further investigation at the beginning of January.

My Complete setup is the correct NRG short hub adapter for the FC3S, then an NRG 2.0 Quick release with a Nardi wheel. All the play is in the short hub. The QR is tight and play free.
When I first got it, it was play free. My GTUs has the PS removed, and I think the pressure caused it to loosen. I think the issue is coming from the plastic backing.

Who else is running an NRG short hub, and do you have a similar issue?

Thanks for your input!

Are you running a properly de-powered rack or just PS disconnected? I'm surprised you get play out of the hub and not the quick release. I have a Momo hub, an NRG carbon QR 2.0, and a Momo wheel with zero play. You sure everything is tightened up properly? Use some red threadlocker? :)

REAmemiya_fan 12-20-11 05:50 PM

I have the NRG FC short hub and QR 2.5 with zero play in it, wheel is attached via phillips head tapered bolts. and the wheel is a Personal. Best decision I've ever made :)

PS is disconnected, I'll be putting it back on in the spring.

Everything is on right, Turn signal cancel and everything works.

I have the nrg short hub, nrg quick release 2.5 with a sparco steering wheel and my shit is strong. No play at all. I have my PS rack looped.

Romanator 12-20-11 10:26 PM

I have the exact same setup as you do Molotovman and I also have a nardi steering wheel. I am running power steering by the way.

SpikeDerailed 12-21-11 01:05 PM

Im running the NRG short hub, 2.5 quick release, and a momo wheel and no issues after 2 and a half years.

CAPTN_SLAPPIN 12-24-11 06:05 PM

Ccould it be because of the spline count being off a little?

In short, no.
If the splines were numerically mismatched- even by the impossible "little"- the hub would need to be driven on with a sledge...at which point the installer might have thought something was amiss.
The splining may have been poorly broached and loose though.

BUT...the splines are only part of the retaining system for the hub, and not even the primary part at that.
More important is the taper behind the splines.
With proper interlock on this taper- basically an interference fit- the splines could be eliminated and there wouldn't be any play.

Maybe try a washer behind the hub nut, might help seat the hub on the taper better.

I have the correct Mazda hub adapter. I'm going to have to double check when I get home

I'm using an NRG Short hub, QR 2.0, and a Momo.

I've got a little bit of play in mine -- about the same as the OP described. If I crank it down any further it'll bust the CAS and the power steering throws a fit, but it'll be solid.

UPDATE!

Today I found there IS an issue with the NRG short hub. If you just put it on, it does not properly seat. You have to modify the gray plastic turn signal cancel extension piece.

Mine felt solid when I put it on because it squeezed up tight against the gray piece. The gray piece cracked and started causing me to have play.

In order to have to NRG short hub ride up and seat properly where the steering column starts to cone out, you have to take a dremel to the gray piece and make it about half it's size. I have a picture of mine modified but I don't have time to upload it for the next two days.

The NRG hub is just flat on the back with two holes for the cancellor. The OEM steering wheel has a nipple section that stocks out past the flat surface with two holes. The splines continue inside of it so that it can ride up on the coned part of the column, the outer diameter of the nipple part fits inside of the gray piece.

I will upload pictures later, I just wanted to post an FYI for you guys. Some of you may have already modified the gray piece.

SpikeDerailed 12-30-11 12:05 PM

Mine is a vert, so whole area is a bit different, and I had to modify just to make the hub work at all.

REAmemiya_fan 12-30-11 09:55 PM

I never had to modify mine for it to work right, maybe you got the one in a million bad unit. I know it seems unlikely but it does happen.

fedede10 01-30-12 07:49 PM

i had to cut the back piece also but because mine wouldn't even bolt in flush.

driftingmyFC 01-31-12 12:39 AM

I have the short nrg hub for mazdas and had to remove the turn cancel switch for it to sit flush into the tapered end behind the splines. Also using an nrg quick release 2.0, I have no play at all after 2 years on power steering.

RotaryEvolution 01-31-12 10:41 AM

yes, they will get some play eventually. i just checked one i installed about a year ago that has about 2-3mm of play at the extremity of the wheel, all from wear and tear on the hub itself. the hub itself is still solidly mounted to the column and the play is only in the wheel and mounting ring to the hub, there is 0 wobble in the column shaft portions.

SC-FC 07-29-12 10:03 PM

I know someone said they were running a Momo hub and QR 2.0.

Is anyone running a personal hub and QR? I've had the hub forever and recently bought the QR, but it looks like i may have to buy the short hub to make it work :/

It did come with spacer-esque adapter rings, but it looks like it won't be too safe. Thoughts?

I'm learning something after looking at a few pictures recently.

S4 and S5 have different configurations on the steering column. The turn signal cancel on the S4 seems to be recessed quite a bit more allowing more of the spline to enter the hub...

Take a look at the S4:

Man! I wish I had an S5 picture somewhere... I'll say this. The gray plastic piece is completely visible on the S5... Man I need a S5 pic!

Just bumping this thread instead of starting a new one. I recently went with a similar setup as OP and have the similar play he describes, I have an s4 though and it seems the problem is more prevalent in s5? Did anyone ever go about fixing this in a s4? I recently took everything off and put a washer on the hub then installed the nut also but it didnt really help anything.

Thanks!

Take off that grey turn signal chancellor and see if it still has play. If the play is gone, cut the turn signal chancellor down and reinstall it.

How would you do that?
"Cut it down", I mean.

I'll give that a try next time I mess with the wheel, car is down atm, lil screw holding the fuel pump cover on broke so im waiting till I can try to get it out to worry about it. Although the play doesn't affect driving too much.

Did you just take a dremel and trim the two pointy stalks down a bit?

Munari 12-04-13 09:12 PM

Running the NRG short hub and 2.0 quick release on a s5 with no play.

With a Dremel, it's plastic. :)
It won't be pretty, but it'll be functional.
