White smoke at cold start & ALWAYS flooding at hot start...huh?
 

Ok so a couple issues I have left on this 88 TII is:
I always get a huge cloud of smoke out of the exhaust at cold start, but only if I don't start it for a few days. If I start it once in the morning (it smokes) and then once again later in the afternoon or evening, it doesn't smoke. It only lasts about 30 seconds, and then it goes away and doesn't come back until I let it sit for a few days and start it again.
Also, once the car warms up, it is impossible to start it, UNLESS I mash the throttle all the way down right before cranking. If I press the throttle all the way down, then crank the engine, it will turn 3-4 times and with some effort it will start up. Not smoking, idle is good around 800rpms.

It's bone stock, except for an FD fuel pump. Also did the fuel pump rewire and grounded the ECU.

Oh, and I had my injectors cleaned. Didn't have this problem before cleaning the injectors.
Side note: While the manifold was off and the injectors were being cleaned, I messed around with the thermowax (thought about deleting it but didn't want idle issues, so I put it back on). After I put it all back together, I had an idle problem (which I fixed and set to 750-800) and this hot start problem started as well.

And I get horrendous fuel economy as well. Maybe 13 or so mpg

Does it seem like there's fuel dripping into the engine? I sent the injectors to Osidetiger and they made no note of the injectors being leaky.

It just seems to be running super rich all the time, especially at startup.

Any thoughts?

check the water thermo sensor at the back of the water pump to make sure it is connected cleanly.

I would check the injectors, maybe during cleaning one or two might of gotten stuck in the "Open" position and that could be causing your flooding when the engine is "Hot"due to it being on and passing more fuel than it should.

How can I check the injectors to see if they're stuck in the "open" position?

I had the same thing happen to me a year and a half ago. Smoked on cold starts and flooding when hot starting. I swapped out engines and broke down the old one. I had a stuck side seal and my oil seals and coolant seals completely wrecked.

I don't mean to be a doomsayer but thats how it went down for me. Time for a rebuild!

Well I didn't have the problem before I tore the UIM off to have the injectors cleaned and put the FD pump in.

Well here are some options.

1. put the stock pump back in, if you still have it and its good, and see if the problem persists.
2. the people who cleaned the injectors screwed em up.
3. your compression is bad and it is just now starting to be problematic. (do a compression test)

smoke on startup is your main indicator, meaning something is leaking into the engine and telling you something. that something is "it's time".

time to bite the bullet and save up for a rebuild. be glad the original engine lasted this long.

White smoke on cold start = broken seals ..white smoke is a result of coolant leaking into your chambers...at least this is my experience
