whinning noise
Got a '86 n/a 5-spd. When its running and in neutral it whines when i let off the clutch. My step dad said it might be a throw out bearing. Any thoughts? Thx

yes, you should probably fix that....unless you want your flywheel to look like mine.

IMO your all wrong. If it whines with the clutch pushed in, it is the TO bearing. If it whines without the clutch in, it is the transmission input bearings. Mine did the same thing till finally it broke the front input bearing.I Got a rebuilt unit with the same TO bearing and the tranny was silent.

I think he is referring to the bearings that the transmission main shaft rides on. When the clutch is engaged (i.e., pedal all the way out), the main shaft turns on it's bearings and can make the sound you hear. In fact, new RX-8's make this noise even when new, although it is more of a soft rattling noise.
The throwout bearing is idle when the clutch is engaged and only comes to play when you press on the pedal. |
