Wheres my coolant goin??
 

hi :) I have an '88 S4 13bt and it keeps overheating....i checked the radiator before i left on a small trip round town, it was full, I checked the radiator overflow it was low but not empty. I went for a drive and the temp came up, and kept goin up. I stopped let it cool a bit, when i opened it *slowly* there was hardly any water in the radiator and the over flow was overflowing. I currently have no thermostat.
I have checked for bubbles in the coolant when its running and I cant see any coming up.

seriously though, that's one of the few problems mine hasn't given me yet (crossing fingers). Good luck tracking it down and I'm sure someone will be able to give you some advice.

ever try squeezing the upper radiator hose??
maybe bubble will come out

u know there's got to be some air or pressure pushing the coolant therefore filling up the overflow reservior

yeah i tried bleedin the system with the bleed screw on the radiator, It does have no thermostat. maybe my raditor caps fucked up??

everything is possible
so why not replace the cap
it's only like 10 bucks i guess
and takes u like 10 secs to replace it

One thing you might want to check is to see if your pressure release on the upper part of the radiator is in place or tightened down properly. This might cause pressure to b exist but never get past that point thereby dumping your fluid into the overflow. Also check to see if your drain on the radiator is not leaking or is tightened as well. What could be happening is that the fluid is boiling over because the lack of coolant. Also very bis point to make your radiator lasts longer, use only distilled water, there are no sediments like in tap water to build up and get trapped inside the radiator and break it down. Same problem here two week now :(

First time I'm going for a coffee, and I push the Rex a bit too hard :D. After I get there, the Low Coolant goes off. I check the radiator, and it sure was missing some coolant, which had gone over to the overflow. Next day I take the Rex in to a Mazda shop, they check it out, and some hose needed replacement. Also new thermostat, but no new cap (seemed to be working fine)

All's good for 3-4 days. This week the Low Coolant goes off again. Check the overflow, and it sure was half full. Seemed like every time I turned off the engine, the radiator wouldnt suck back the coolant in the overflow (spot-on for a malfuctioning cap). Anyway, I fill the radiator a couple of times (just 50-100ml, not much), but this happened again.

And then I notice that the time that I didnt see this problem was when I had the cap on with the lettering facing backwards :eek:, and when the Low Coolant buzzer...buzzed the cap was on with the lettering facing forwards :wtf:
So I placed the cap with the lettering facing backwards, and all's good....;)




....in case you didnt notice, that means "malfuctioning cap" :D
