where do i install mechanical water temp gauge sensor ?
 
where should i be installing the fitting for my autometer mechanical temp gauge ?

I was thinking the best looking spot would be the filler neck but Im not sure if this would screw up the flow, or if there is a certain way to angle it on there for it to flow better. not sure on size but it has brass npt fittingsand it looks pretty big size like 5/8 or around that, figured u tap wherever u put it on

I'm not real familiar with your year, but my water/coolant temperature sensor is located under the oil filter housing on my 1990 FC3C. The easiest way to find it , check out your FSM, tells you exactly where it is located.

Yes, the STOCK sender is there... but he's talking about adding a sender for another gauge...

you can drill and tap the water neck, but its an NPT tap, i think its 1/4NPT, it should say in the directions somewhere what size it is...

the BEST way to do it is to take the water pump housing off and drill and tap it into the back of the water pump housing, beside the stock sensor.

mechanical??? Ummmmm.. you sure about that??

ok -- this is entirely based on the BRAND NEW issue of Superstreet where they install the new defi gauges into yam'z 240sx -- they put the water temp gauge sensor in the radiator hose going from radiatior to engine.... makes sense to me but then again i cant even find the bleeder on the radiator to flush out my coolant system so if anyone wants to tell me where that is... i am assuming that i will have to remove the debris sheild underneath the car and then all things will be revealed... it is also 2 in the morning... maybe i should go make a new post and ask for some help on this

Putting the sensor above the thermostat (e.g., in the filler neck or upper radiator hose) is the easy way, but certainly not the best way. This is because a stuck-closed thermostat will show a cold reading despite the fact that it's boiling to death. The sensor should be placed under the thermostat on the back of the water pump like YoD said.

The sensor on the left is the ECU thermosensor. On S4's and some S5's the sensor on the right will not be there, it'll just have a blank boss. You need to drill and tap a hole there to suit the gauge's temp sender.

And no those aren't my legs. ;)

I read that and thought why not. I had mine in a radiator pipe hose after the thermostat prior to this (other car has it's in the electrical fan thermostat location using an adapter).

So I removed the water drain from the intermediate housing, measured the threads and got my die out. I made new threads on the AutoMeter sender. The die slipped right over the part that sits in the water. I cut the new threads over the fine threads of the AutoMeter. It turned out just fine. I was sure there was going to be a fifty fifty chance the old threads would be a problem, but there's no trace of them left over. The new threads look just fine.

Screwed it in, put the wire on and started the car up. Works perfectly fine.

That's for an electrical sender, not mechanical. Mechanicals are too large for that method.
