when getting a headlight scoop...
 
do you still get cold air if you dont cut a hole in the frame? ive been told you do, but not as much, so i just want to know is it a signifigant diff? i know logically it should be, but ive seen many fcs w/o the hole

i agree...about the only way to get a real difference is to cut a hole....take out the windshield washer resivoir and the air silencer crap, cut a 3" hole in front of the fender well and run your pipe to use the right brake duct....that is probably the best and easiest way to do a cold air intake.

A vented lid is about as good as using the car's vent as an a/c system.

There is no direct ducting to lead the air in a path of little resistance to the proper place you want it, the filter. Build a true cool air intake and stop buying fad/ricer products.

Even when cutting at the frame of the headlight assembly and removing the weather stripping(rather stupid) there isn't a directed path so the air likely just swirls around in there and flows out other areas.

yea i have a huge hks foam filter right behind the brake duct hole so im getting all the air i can handle, and another thing is when you make your piping use gradual bends, try not to use harsh bends over 45 degrees.....i just went to the local exhaust shop and had them make a 3 inch intake for my TII.....it made the turbo spool quicker and its whine sound is a little louder so i know it helped a bunch.

this was on my GXL before i got my TII.....this was temporarily made of PVC before i got it made at an exhaust shop for 40 bucks....just pull the fender well plastic cover off the passenger side, then jack the car up, take out the winshield washer resivoir and the air silencer hose, then get a drill and put a titanium saw bit on it and cut a big hole right in front of the fender well and there ya go....it makes the engine louder and you can hear a big ass sucking sound when you get on it....once you get right to the bottom of the hole in the metal that you just cut, you will bend the piping like 45 degrees and stick a fat ass foam filter right in the front bumber where the right brake duct used to be.

Ummm..... My headlight scoop on my GTU worked JUST FINE without a bunch of piping....

if you look fromt he ending bay forward, you can see right up under the headlight cover.......

You just need to do two things... 1) make or buy a cold air box that seals up against the hood and 2) remove the littel flap attached to the hood so that the air can through.


My Headlight scoop is acutally a scoop too, i guess is should mention.... it sticks up about an inch behind the opening, and dishes down about an inch in front of the opening.. It gets much better air draw than the 1985 camaro hood styled vent covers that just have a trough in the cover with a hol at the back.

When you had it made at your exhaust shop, did you just tell them you needed a pipe that would follow where the pvc currently was? Or did you have specific parameters to give 'em... I'm just curious because i loved the look/sound of a true CAI on my old car and i'd like a better solution than just trying to fab a box that won't get as much fresh air anyways.

The head;ight scoop willwork just fine. It will allow air to penetrate into the engine compartment. Is it as good as removing washer, running pipe and so forth, no, but defintely an improvement. Look at the stock air intake. It's actually in an area where no air is flowing, and works fine under normal conditions. Geez, I've been running 10/11 lbs with the completely stock setup for 4 years with no problems, so the headlight scoop will work just fine. I would suggest a "box" around the intake filter and drill small holes into the radiator support in front of the filter for additional air.
Inexpensive and an easy upgrade.

yo 89vert, make it out of pvc first so you can drive it up there and they can get an idea of what you want......but then tell them instead of a big ass j-shape where it comes off the mass air to have it slope to the hole at like a 40-45 degree angle so the air flows in a straighter line, i even had them get an exhaust hanger and weld it to the fender well under the hood to give the intake some support......it will make a huge difference in throttle response and it sound awesome....the engine will growl when you get on it, and if you have the hood up and move the throttle you can hear a big ass sucking sound, it's a great mod for the money, it should run like 40-50 bucks....good luck

I dont know if anyone mentioned this, but watch out to not get water sucked in. Or I'm just thinking about turbo. . .

Yah that is an issue, but i'm also in Arizona, and water on the road is a rarity :)

I do intend to look for a way to protect it. But if it really is back up behind the bumper, it's going to do just fine unless you tend to drive on flooded roads a lot. If so, you should be drivin a truck, not a rx7, lol. :bigthumb:

EDIT: do you have any pics of the finished product?

yeah ive been planning to make the cold air box too, plus the brake duct mod to be used tor additinal cold air, and maybe even keepint the stock air inlet, that would be 3 points of entery, that should be enought dont ya think? lol...

What you propose is more trouble than making a piped intake, I suggest you try that route to save yourself the troubles and extra cost for a setup that will only *match* a piped setup, at its best, rather than surpass it.

can you explain how to make a piped intake, cuz i dont get it, i thought you ment just piping up form the brakes

You buy mandrel bends, 3" is best IIRC for your money, you buy a real K&N filter for ~40 dollars and you lead the pipe from the TB elbo to the AFM to the Filter in a location that has fresh air hitting it. The wheel well is one of these locations, I personally used the front of the car right in front of the oil cooler.
