Wheel Bearing Q's.

Well the turbo II might be needing some wheel bearings, seeing i can move the wheel back and forth (toward and away from the engine) while its sitting on the ground, and i get random steering wheel shaking. anyway, NAPA has a problem. The computer says the bearings are like the FD ones and pressed into the rotor assembly. Which from my putting the brakes on experience, its not.

So inorder to get the correct bearings, i need some sort of model number or something i can have referenced. Honestly, any other information would be great. I wont be able to take it apart myself for at least two weeks thanks to school. So help is appreciate. i want to get the parts ASAP. i hate having little crap problems like this.

They are not pressed into the rotor but they are pressed into the hub and were not neccessarily designed for replacement without replacement of the whole hub. (at least that is mazda's stance). Similar to my local NAPA sounds like the guy behind the counter is a mouth breather. Or their puter is just flat wrong.

There are methods developed for replaceing them. see mazdatrix.com

BUT, Have you tried to just retighten them? There is an article illlistrating how to do that on FC3S.org

i guess ill just wait and take them apart. what confused me more was the fact the computer said its one with the hub while a order book said you can get individual bearings. And the numbers between the two are switched for what they should be.

*sigh*

I figured id dig this up rather than start my own thread since ive got the same task ahead of me now.

Ive got a 90 GTU-S and i just hit the wear indicators on my front pads today. and a few weeks ago, my right wheel bearing started making a really high pitched metal-on-metal scraping noise while at speed in a straight line. turning slightly one way or another makes the noise go away. i also double checked both wheels; pushing on the driver and passenger tire w/ the car on the ground results in slight play... so i think i need to do pads, fluid, bearings and seals.

since this is an S5, is there any special procedure to replacing the front bearings and seals aside from just removing the front hub nut, pulling the hub, pulling the inner and outer bearings, prying out the inner dust seal and installing the new dust seal, inner and outer bearings and reinstaling hub?

my S4 didnt require the use of a hydraulic press to remove bearings or anything like that. it was a straight parts replacement. is the S5 just as easy as the S4?

thanks andy, no hydraulic press required for bearing installation from what i see on your link... just for driving the inner dust seal, but i can improvise something.

thanks

here's a side view of the hub.

the aluminum matrial in the center never contacts anything, so you can grind some out to give you enough space to tap the race out with a punch and a hammer.

the blue is the where the wheel bearings would be, the red is where you cut.

but, the race wont need replaced if its not marred or scored right? the bearing assembly can just be swapped out if the race is fine? i dont remember having to remove the race on my S4... but that was like 4 years ago.

thanks man
chris

i'd replace the race too. chances are if your wheel is wiggly with the bearing tight, both it and the race should probably be replaced.

Here's the Mazdatrix write up with pics.

they dont seem to carry the bearing races......

GUITARJUNKIE28 03-01-06 11:10 PM

napa, if you have them where you live.

torean 03-02-06 08:28 AM

is there a part number?....they never seen to get the right parts....

vedro 03-02-06 09:39 AM

I ordered my entire bearing assembly from Victoria British. http://www.victoriabritish.com/

My racers are fused to the wheel hub, so I think yours might be too. I might have to give in and buy a new wheel hub because I cant get those darn racers out.

just cut the nothces in the aluminum and hammer them out with a punch. piece of cake.
