What's a fair price for 2nd Gen, N/A, 86-88?

I folks...I.m trying to determine what's a fair price for 2nd Gen RX-7 in good shape. I'm thinking a normally aspirated (non-turbo), circa 86-88, in good shape.

Also, is there a price difference for the convertible?

Thanks!

I have seen alot of 2nd gen N/A bought for around 2-3 grand and if its in good condition its a good deal. You dont want the convertable cause its heavyier so that means seconds off the clock!!

Let's see... I got my 87 n/a for like $1500, which was in great shape i think. The only problems it had were common rx7 probs, like flooding. And my friend got his for $1100 which was also in good shape. runs faster than mine. And it's prob was 3800 rpm hesitation, which was fixed. No convertibles though. Just an example for you.

Depends what your looking for...

I got mine for $1700 and it was in good shape with a rebuild. Don't get ripped off. Look for a deal, not the 1st 7 out there.

Running series 4 cars- $1200-$3500, with 'verts and Turbos at the high end.

big mods, or a kid under 25 owned dropps the price $1000.

I got mine from a Chevy dealership. It was in the back getting all dusty. :(

They wanted $3200 for it, but I drove it away for $2600 including tax, title and tags. :D

It was in great condition except for the leather seats and battery. Luckily I had a battery for it at home. I am the second owner; the first was a doctor. It had under 100,000 miles when I got it. I think it was a good price. :)

the 86-88 are fairly cheap compared to a 89-91. good shape ranges from 1600-3000 and anything over that is too much unless the car has very low miles and is immaculate. personally i would get one for about 2K with a good engine and then just replace the small cosmetic things to make it a really nice car (and then of course after that work on increasing the performance)

i think the verts are a bit more expensive but i dont know why since they are slower. maybe the owners think they are rare or something.

you will be able to find a good deal

Got mine for $99.00!!!!!

It had been hit in the drivers side really bad.
PERFECT engine. 110 PSI oil pressure at 4 grand.

After about 5 hours of prying the door open, I finally got it off.

Got a new door for $20 and put it on. It wouldn't close because the frame was bent. So, I got a wench and tied one end of it to a street pole. I tied the other end to the bent frame where the door latches, and cranked down. I had to crank so hard the car was standing up on 2 wheels!!!!!! Finally I bent it back so the door will close just great.

I love my car. You can find great deals if you are willing to find it and fix it. Look for 7's that are in the paper that will not start. Chances are they are just flooded and are perfectly fine. You can get em for a steal!

Good luck,

Brandon

LOL!!! Brandon, this is a great story! First, $99, then the winch. I love it!

When you say the rotary engine is flooded, what do you mean? And what special trick should I do to correct it?

brando 12-30-01 09:44 PM

Well, for example, say some guy/girl gets in their 7 and starts it up when its cold and just moves it about 10 feet then shuts it off. They go back in the house and about 2 hours later, comes back out to go home.
They get in the car and try to start it. It just cranks and cranks. The person doesn't know what to do. They run their battery down about 5 times trying to start it. The next day, they have it towed in to a gas station/Mazda mechanic. They try to fix it and they can't because they don't know what they are doing. They then do a compression check on it and it shows very low or no compression. The mechanic says that the person needs a new engine because there is no compression. So, the person doesn't have enough money to buy a new engine or they are sick and tired of the car so they sell it for a VERY low price thinking the engine is shot.

What it comes down to is NEVER start the car and turn it off without letting it warm up. It will flood the engine. Then it crank real fast and ACT like it is shot. Most of the time all you have to do is pull the fuel pump fuse then crank for about 15 Seconds then put it back in, then start it right up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There are other things you might have to do to get it unflooded too such as the ATF trick or having someone pull/push start you with a car.

Trust me, there are really stupid people out there. So if you call someone about a 7 and they say that it ran fine when they parked it last and it never started again, ITS FLOODED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

GOOD CAR FOR A CHHHEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAPP PRICE!!!!!!!!

GOOD LUCK,

Brandon

Thanks for the great reply! My 85 1st G always started, even stored outside nightly in the dead of winter, so I never had these "experiences" with it. Of course, it was purchased new, sold at 42K miles, and NA...

THANKS AGAIN!

brando 12-30-01 10:46 PM

Your welcome!

I didn't mean cold as in temperature. I ment cold as in Engine being cold. Not being started.........

What would be a good price for an 88' tII in good condition w/ 100k or less miles on it? Or 100k+ miles on it?

Mallard Duck 12-30-01 11:30 PM

The trick is, as stated above, find someone who hates it. The car you see in my signature was $360. Counting DMV fees, tax, tags, registration, and inspection, it was on the road for $500.

It was an older guy who owned it. A couple of hail dents, some rust the width of a pencil on the rear quarter panel, torn drivers seat, and no radio. Oh, and it was flooded and wouldn't start.

Anyone know what it's actually worth?

Yelow RX-7 12-30-01 11:35 PM

certainly more than $500!

Yelow RX-7 12-30-01 11:37 PM

dam i forgot to tell you. there is this norweigan guy near me sellin a 86 base for 2500. i tried to tell him the engine needed new apex seals and the engine was gonna blow and that i would buy it for 500 but that didnt work... im sure you could get him down, i could go check for you if you would like...

ROFLOL! I can see it now!

"What are you talking about? It runs perfectly!"

"But your apex seals are blown and your engine will be going anyday now!"

lol

I got a 88 GXL from a 38 yr old guy, with a rebuilt motor with only 14K on it for $1500. Ive only had to put a couple hundred into her. Just shop around.

jabbadeznuts 08-11-02 01:32 PM

Well,

I'm looking at an '87 from a guy that works next door to me. He's in his mid to late 20s and the car was owned by his siser before him. He has all papers and maintnence records to boot. The Oil and coolant are both VERY clean and it has no leaks. The alternator has been replaced. Inside, the radio was stolen and the vent direction controler thing is gone allong with the piece that goes arrund the radio. I have not driven the car yet, but he says that it does NOT have the ~3800RPM hesitation thing. It's got a red interior that is in good condition. Up front it's got 4 piston stationary (sp?) calapers (sp?). The paint is in OK condition with a fiew spots of rust and a fiew dings. The exhaust on the passanger side is rusted out, but it passed GA emissions with flying colors recently.

He wants $1700.

I would have no problem paying it, but I think I can get it for between 1500 & 1700. Hopefully on the lower end.

As a bonus, there is a junk yard like 10 minutes from my house that has a 2nd gen RX that I can get parts off of. It ran into a telephone pole so the front clip is GONE!

Good luck and tell us how it goes.

Alex
