? Whats the deal with synthetic oil filters ?
 

I have always bought Mobile 1, 15w/50 synthetic oil for my car but just heard of synthetic oil filters. WTF, this "Technition" at the local oil change place,"went with a friend who doesn't change own oil" told me that I need a syn filter with syn oil.

Can you guyz give me some intel about this?

huh? what? synthetic oil filters? never heard of em....probably because either they don't exist or it's the fact that i've never used synthetic in any of my cars....

Never used synthetic, why not? Disadvantages?

it's an arguable subject but from what I understand, using synthetic in a rotary isn't a very good thing. If i remember correctly, synthetic oil is thinner than standard mineral oil of the same weight so it ends up slipping through little grooves and inperfections in your engine leading to leaks and such....some have never had a problem with it and some have. I use Castrol GTX 20-50 wt year round...

I dunno if what I said about synthetic oil holds true or not, i'm just telling you what i've heard...

Modern, good quality syn is fine in a rotary, it's been discussed several times. GTX is good stuff for dino oil as well.

There are no synthetic specific filters, but getting a QUALITY filter can be more important then the type of oil you use. Wix (Napa Gold), Purolator Pure One, Mobil 1, and Mazda all have good filters, with Wix being probably the best bang/buck, and available at any Napa. Somthing like 6.00 bucks.

K&N Oil Filter FTW

There are synthetic media oil filters, this is proably what you saw. The use a synthetic fiber filter media insted of the standard paper element. They do a better job at filtering the oil because they trap smaller particles then the paper. I prefere them, my favorae was the purolator pure one, but the autoparts store that carried them closed so ive been using mobil one filters. K&N's arnt bad either, ive used them when i dont want to drive across town to get a mobil one. They are standard paper media however.

I use napa Gold filters.

Seriously though, I just use the OEM filters. I use WIX air filters in my MX-3, though and they seem to be good.

I use Purolator Pure1 oil filters.
They are synth oil filters.

you do not need synthetic oil filters but the most important feature of a quality oil filter is a anti siphon check valve which holds the oil in the filter once the engine is turned off, where your basic one would just drain right out once the engine is off causing dry starts, and the thing about rotary engines and synthetic oils is that the cheaper brands dont not burn up like a non synthetic oil and starts to gum up which leads to build up which causes the oil leaks probably due to an increase in pressure since the clearances are getting smaller but I am not sure about that part. We all know a rotary consumes oil so you would need a high quality synthetic that will burn up with the air and fuel

I only use Honda PCX filters (S2000, NSX) made by Toyo Ruki of Japan. It's a great filter and not very expensive at all.

I'm just weird like that, I guess.

I use atkins oil filters they fit perfect with no leaks what so ever. It is anippon filter from the altrom group.

Supertech oil filters are good enough for our vehicles. Anything more expensive is a waste of money considering that we change our oil every 3k. If you do decide to use a more expensive filter, you should leave it in for 9,000 miles (3 oil changes). If you don't, you are foolishly spending money.

Oil filters are only there to stop the big chunks and any foreign material in your oil. 99.9999% of oil contaminanents are suspended in solution and can't be filtered out anyway.
