Whats This?

What is this thing, its located on the left side of the engine bay infront of the strut tower. I'm just wondering because mine was all gooped up and I took the goop out to find an Adjust screw. I want to know what it does.

Isn't it the idle rich-lean adjustment screw ?

The one you should never ever tamper with according to the FSM :)

IT's used to adjust the idle speed ... check the FSM in user SURESHOT's signature for how to do it.

Hmm, I tooled with it, in my mindless way when the car was on, and my idle did not move at all. Is that bad?

It's the Variable Resistor, used to set the idle mixture. Set it as per the instructions on page 4A-77 of the FSM.

I just read taht in the FSM, It is indedd supposed to be gooped up. Whoops. My car also idles at 1500rpm instead of 725-750 that is not somethign i should mess with. I'll goop it back up tomorrow or this weekend. lucky i moved the screw back to the origional position, I marked it before I messed with it. I've heard the TPS is the culprit of my abd Idle.

same thing on mine! i idle at 1500rpms too and i messed with the L-R variable resistor nothing happend. how does this work? is this the reason of the idle?

Make sure the throttle plates are allowed to go back to full resting position (check operation of the thermowax ... see FSM).

Now read carefully .... Most likely something stupid happened that's easy to spot. Idle speed does not go whacko all by itself (usually). So try to have a good look at the engine compartment and look for disconnected things before starting to adjust things. You have been warned.

Now, if you are sure everything looks good, then you can go ahead and do the following:

- adjust TPS and then set the idle speed.

If you can't get the idle speed to get down to 750, then you most likely have a vac leak, that you missed.

could a vac lines being mixed up cause this? Where exactly is the TPS at, no one has told me. I've just gotten general answers.
