What tranny do i have? T2 or stock?

I have a 88 convertible with a t2 swap from the previous owner but i don't know if i have the t2 transmission. Is there anyway i can find out?

I really need to quick because my clutch is slipping really bad and i need to know if i need a t2 clutch kit or a n/a clutch kit.

The middle of the T2 tranny is sort of ribbed in texture. Somewhat like a huge waffle.

Peyman 09-19-05 04:05 PM

it should be ribbed looking straight up at it where the drain plug is?

KompressorLOgic 09-19-05 04:06 PM

the t2 tranny will have a flat bottom with sort of a flat ribed pan on the bottom, the na one wont have this wide flat area.

It looks like this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/87-90...spagenameZWDVW

Hmm, just checked...I don't really see nor feel the ribbed texture thingy. Maybe that's why the clutch has gone on it. I am driving a T2 on a NA tranny...

Instead of changing the whole thing, could I just replace this one with a stage 1 or 2 clutch kit for an NA?

EDIT: Just confirmed I have a NA Tranny  My best bet is to get a racing clutch then, this way it will compensate a little. Also, I suppose those ribbs are designed to cool the tranny faster so that also explains some heat on the shifter after driving it hard.

Any suggestions other than swapping the tranny?

If you're running a T2 engine with a N/A transmission, then odds are, your transmission isn't long for this world.

If your not drag racing or running drag slicks the NA drivetrain is go up to 300hp....swap to a high quailty gear lube. Also a note on the clutch...if you get a high performance clutch it will be harder on the trans due to the fact the clutch won't slip like a stocker. so IMO I would NOT get a high perf. clutch till you get a T2 tranny, that way the clutch will hopefully slip before the trans/reardiff blows out. Just my 2 cents

This is a very bad description... all FC trannies have ribs.

Non Turbo tranny: See ribs:

The correct description would be that the R type trannys (Turbo) has an access plate on the bottom, as well as two fill locations on the side. Now this access plate would feel flat and ribless on the bottom of the tranny.

A M type tranny (non turbos) will not have the access plate on the bottom of the tranny and will have only one fill hole.

But saying one has ribs and the other does not is just lame and adds even more confusion to readers here.

Oh well, I never claimed to be good with words. However, I don't think the N/A looks anything like a big waffle, but the T2 does :bigthumb:.

if you are running a n/a tranny on a heavier turbo car.. it IS not going to last no matter what a stripper tells you.... my and i once put two n/a trannies on a turbo engine(thats all we had).. took us about a month and a half to kill them both.... really look into getting a turbo tranny they are cheap$350.. however the driveshaft may raise the price a lil .. maybe everything but the tranny in a n/a driveline is good for 300 hp. clutch slave cylinders should be no more than 40-50 bucks i think victoria british has them for 20.... later

clubber 09-19-05 10:12 PM

Well, since you brought yp the "rest of the drivetrain", the T2 trans yolk is bigger and the driveshaft, rear end, half shafts, flywheel, starter, slave cylinder and clutch all need to be swapped in at once. Also. No the rear end ect. won't handle the turbo engine long.

Peyman 09-20-05 09:39 AM

Ah crap...another half ass job done by the pervious owner. Looks like I might as well change the tranny and rear to turbo specs. Although, I don't really think this car will see more than 300HP. I am going to mod is slightly and I might just keep it around 250-300HP range, I won't slap a bigger turbo on it or anything, maybe just increase the PSI to reach that 250-300 goal and upgrade the tranny and have it as a daily driver.

I don't have slicks and I haven't been to the track yet so it will prolly stay as a street car for me.

Thanks for the info guys!

you need the slave cylinder to swap in a t2 tranny? i just swapped trannies and, although the car is not running yet, the clutch seems to work. what happens if I use the NA slave?

Peyman 09-20-05 05:07 PM

i got the stock clutch today from Autozone for $130, with a life time replacement, anytime it wears out, as many times as it wears out, i get a new one for free!!!

Changing it tomorrow so i'll let you guys know how it goes.
