What is a "Speed Pulse Generator"?

How's it going, guys?

I came across something as I was cleaning out the boot, left over in the car from the previous owner (or factory installed, who knows).

Does anybody know what a Speed Pulse Generator is and what it does? It's a Pioneer ND-PG1 Speed Pulse Generator. I've even found a picture of it on the net (http://caraudiosecurity.com/catalog/...e.php+pID+2732), but I just can't find anything on what it's supposed to do or what it's for.

No one I've talked to seems to know what it is. I'm just wondering what it does and whether its removal will affect anything. Anyone else got one of these in their cars?

They are for GPS navigation systems.

EDIT: basicaly its a magneto pickup that counts wheel revolutions and turns it into an eletronic pulse. A computer reads the puslse as speed, and puts it into mph for a navigation system to use.

Although high high scale navigation systems use coordinates to check speed, this method is more trued.

There were very few cars with speed pulse generators stock in 1990. Almost, infact probably all, new cars today use electronic speed sensors as opposed to mechanical drive.

Coincidentaly, the stock ABS system *does* have a speed pulse generator. Its being used less for speed check, and more for physical movement check.
