what should normal oil pressure be?

I just finaly fixed my oil pressure gage, however since i had the needle off the gauge i think its calibrated wrong. on startup the gauge reads about 95psi, then after the car warms up it drops to about 45psi at idle. if i can get a general consensus of what average pressure readings are i can try to set the needle correctly.

Idle 30, WOT 60....

i 3erd that

SystemIDx 04-05-06 09:31 AM

When I'm driving around normally, mine sits around 90-100. Dunno what that means. Car drives like a champ.

This information can also be found in the Factory Service and Haynes manual.

Your oil pressure sounds fine.

DerangedHermit 04-05-06 10:27 AM

Mine idles around 45, but sometimes when I'm cruising (~3000 rpm) it jumps to 80-90. Is this bad?

RylAssassin 04-05-06 03:45 PM

Ted's got it all on his sight http://www.fc3spro.com/
Its supposed to be around 30 at idle and no more than 80 at higher rpm's. Although Ted mentioned that high oil pressure isint neccissarily bad...

Oh and at startup (cold) its supposed to go to like 80psi due to the bypass oil pellet (i think thats whats it called) opening to allow oil to circulate the rotor chamber.

30 idle and 60 driving

r33 04-06-06 12:41 AM

i dont know if my stock oil pressure gauge is off or what. here's the readin

under operation: 60
idle: between 30 and 60 (45 i guess) and idle speed is 800

car is a 88 t2 all stock.

Is that normal??

Sgt. Pepper 04-06-06 12:59 AM

My stock guage shows around 20PSI at idle and 60PSI when driving. I heard that the stock guages suck. I'm also idling at 650, maybe that's why my idle PSI is so low?

same here as pressure but i idle around 700 - 800

high oil pressure is mainly only bad on turboed engines because it can be forced past the turbo seals.

the majority rules though, 30-45 at idle and 60ish when cruising, it should only read higher than 60 if there has been an oil regulator modification made. i prefer not to run over 60psi on turboed engines for reasons stated earlier, it can be done but the turbo would require it's own regulator or regulatory device.

as you said high oil pressure is bad for turbo car and my idle oil pressure is right on the border line so should i adjust it back to let say below 45?

or your 18 years old gauge might just be off....
what makes you think YOU could adjust it?

J-Rat 04-10-06 02:19 PM

Well, theoretically you can adjust pressure down by lowering the viscosity of the oil used.

According to the FSM, standard pressure is about 64-78 PSI on a 3k free rev.

you are correct... but lowering the viscosity would only affect the lower rpm...
once the rpm gets high enough, it will still be where the OPR is set at...

Sideways7 04-10-06 02:27 PM

My car can about 0-10 at idle, 40-50 when driving. I think it had a front cover oil seal leak though.

Jerek10 04-12-06 11:45 PM

same here. idling itll be at 30... and on the stock gauge it'll eventually drop to 0. while still idling. and jump to around to 30-45 with some throttle.

I must be running the wrong oil then. 20W50 Royal purple it will be from now on.... Mine stays right around 50 at idle.. At WOT max maybe 70... Although a turbo rebuild is immenent.... I found oil in the intake duct....Can the cold side leak oil? I am assuming so.... Man i just need to strip this engine and start from bare block...... :squint:

slpin 04-13-06 02:17 AM

its because the tid connects to the crankcase
