What performance upgrades for my Vert?
 

Hello. I have an 1989 Vert. What performance upgrades would help me out the most? I have already installed a high flow exhaust, and will be installing a high flow air intake system. I am also planning on swapping out my engine with the Turbo II engine. But what other stuff would help me out the most? Thanks.

what would help you out on your n/a engine or your tII your going to swap in???

Check www.racingbeat.com , they have convertible specific springs for your car. Also try toe-eliminator bushings if the DTSS HUB (rear steer) is worn. Finally replacing those worn-out Swaybar & subframe end links would help with the suspension.

New struts & tires would be good too.

Hey I have a 89 vert and I'm not putting and exhaust, or headers or anything like that because when I turbo charge I'm going to need a new manifold so there's no point to that. But since you are getting another motor you should work on you suspension and brakes, and maybe do you rotors. That way when you swap engines you'll already have that done to your car.

Since you are swaping out the engine eventually, why not a stand alone?

With a good map, you car:

-Will be faster than what it is now
-Will be more reliable than what it is now
-Will save "some" gas

Last but most important (in my book), you will be able to modify your engine (NA, or turbo) any way you want it :D

^^^^ yup this is what im doing... might as well go stand alone and squeeze out all the power out of the n/a while you still have it... and when you get a turbo motor it runs with that too so you get the best of both worlds

Sorry for being stuipid, what do you mean "get a stand-alone"? The car is not running right now, and I have a car to get me around. I am planning on fixing up this RX7 over time, so all engine mods should be for the Turbo II. I am planning on pulling the NA motor & selling it as it has only 60,000 original miles on it.

stand alone means a new ecu, like microtech, haltech, wolf 3d, etc

would be best only if you're planning on getting over 200rwkw

otherwise the stock computer will probably do with minor mods, (stock turbo ecu i mean)

I thought they ONLY made convertibles turbo?

in japan all the verts were turbo.... in the us all of them are n/a ... unless it has been converted

hey not to change the thread but do you know if that na you have now with 60000 has been overheated or anything else....i might be in the market for one soon. cuz my car is having cooling problems and i might have overheated it. and if its all good how much would you get rid of it for im also in indiana.

What was the weight of the US ones?

Cause the Jap ones are pretty boat-like, I think they weigh in around 1300-1350kgs.

the verts in the US are just over 3000 pounds... the s5's are even heavier... they are boats here too if thats what you call heavy pigs heh... thats why the vert is slower than all other rx7's however they are more fun!!

What do you mean by the S5s are even heavier?

I know the japs s4s were lighter by about 30 kgs, or 60 pounds, compared to the s5s, but the s4 convertibles far outweighed a s5 turbo.

Did you only get series 4 convertibles?

my 90 vert moves like a cow in a marathon,but i have a s5 turbo II engine tranny,haltech,3"exhaust system ect.and hopefully i would up grade from a cow to a running bull.......


but when you build a RX7 always get the best and remember these wise words ...

I'm not a 16 year old with a racing complex, i dont care how fast your car is, the guy wanted a cheap way to make his vert fast, so i gave it to him. i dont think he has a large budget to turbo the thing, most 2nd gen owners dont. if they want a fast car then buy something else. there is no way to get a n/a fast in my book and still be streetable. i dont drive my rx7's because they are fast, i drive them for exactly what mazda meant them to be...a car that can get me around without breaking down while mine modded is quick it is not fast by any standard except to extreme ricers. fast to me is something under 13's in the 1/4. since i've owned 5 n/a's including my daily driven s5 vert i might know a thing or two about how fast you can make a n/a and be bareable to drive. i hate seeing people tearing n/as apart trying to find speed which isnt there. turboing a vert is a great way to have an awesome looking car that can achieve the stated speeds but it is not easy, costs a lot of money, and mostly has to be done by you.

ok so the verts are not "fast" i agree with you but they can be "quick", people ask me if my car is fast and i say no its quick because fast is 13's and below, quick is 14's to 15's and anything above that is just slow... it seems like you are thinking what i am anyway

if you are going to do a turbo swap down the road the best thing you can do know is check out racingbeat.com and get suspension stuff. Don't get sways though. I bought sways from RB and they are the same size and weight as the vert sways. Get some vert springs, and some adjustable shocks and some strut bars and it will handle like a dream.

Here's the deal. I love my RX7. I am simply looking to take it & make it better. I am not thinking I can pull 500hp & a 200mph top speed out of it. I just enjoy cars, both the look & performance aspects. If I wanted a "fast" car, it is pretty obvious that there are faster cars out there than the RX7. Fast or not... I would never trade the RX7 for a Mustang which just about everybody has & loves... that's not original... & that's not even that nice of a car... even if it is 'faster.' The early 90s Mustangs look like crap... & probably drive like it too. So thanks to those who offered help.
