What oil do you guys use in your tranny?

Just wondering what brand and type of oil everyone uses in their manual trannies.

A couple weeks after I put that shit in my transmission it started grinding. I'm ordering some Redline.

Icemark 03-06-02 07:10 PM

Redline MT90

ARD T2 03-06-02 07:13 PM

REDLINE MT90 all the way. The only way to go from what I understand.

I have a question one of you guys may be able to answer real quick, and I'm too lazy to run out and sift through my owners manual.

Does the n/a FC tranny use GL4 or GL5 oil?

GL4 for transmissions.
GL5 is straight gear oil and not recommended for transmissions with brass synchros.

See label on bottle for more details.

Okay, I don't have a bottle of Mobil 1 handy but I'm 95% sure that it's GL5.

Yep Mobile 1 75W90 is a GL5 oil... the high sulfur content is hard on the syncros.

Will it actually damage them, or just cause them to not function properly?

Royal Purple 85w. Very good stuff.

Amsoil synthetic

Gene 03-06-02 09:16 PM

I put some redline mt90 in my trans the other day, hoping it would relieve my notchiness in my 1-2 and 2-3 shift, and the grind in 5th. so far, it hasn't improved it. Of course, that tranny is pretty shot to shit by now I guess...

RLBRX7 03-06-02 09:28 PM

I just put Redline MT90 in the trans and Redline 75W90 in the diff. There is some improvement over the notchy shifting I had going into 3rd, but not as much as I had wanted.

It will actually damage them.&nbsp Sulfur attacks brass.

SOME GL5 rated gear oil is okay for transmissions.&nbsp This is why I recommend reading the bottle.

Any synthetic oil (unless specially formulated with friction modifiers such as Redline and Royal Purple products) are NOT good for manual trannies.

They are all just too slippery for the synchros, which is why people complain about gears grinding after they put in mobil 1 synthetic.

Get that synthetic out of there and get some Redline MTL, MT90 or the Automatic/Manual combination oil. Too little friction is very bad for manual transmissions.

I'll go find a bottle and read up on it a bit. If not it sounds like I'll be tearing the transmission apart.

NEO

Grimlock 03-07-02 04:28 PM

neo-geo syn. here too

good shit!!! expensive though

FEDREX 03-07-02 04:30 PM

Redline MT-90

hanman 03-07-02 04:55 PM

Gene,
Your "notchiness" may very well be due to worn out shifter bushings. Try replacing them and I bet you see an improvement. For $20 it's a pretty cheap bet.

Redline MTL, greatest stuff on earth. If your tranny is notchy shifting chances are this will smooth it out.

ka8legend 03-07-02 10:16 PM

Does anyone recommend MTL over MT90 even though it's slightly thinner. It stop the grind when I switched over to the MTL from the MT90. Just not sure if I should continue using it.

Dak 03-07-02 11:19 PM

Mobil 1 synthetic.I've had it in my transmission for three or four years now and it seems to do just fine.I may try Royal Purple or Neo Geo next time or I may stay with Mobil 1.

Tofuball 06-15-04 07:09 AM

Yeh, I'm doing great with Mobil1 :O
Had it for about a year.

The FSM/Hayns/Whatever I was reading said GL4 or GL5 was fine.

Perhaps I should replace it with a GL4 sometime upon hearing this news though :O
