What hood/how best to mount FMIC, rad. and oil cooler
 

OK, so I should be getting a GReddy FMIC for my '90 TII very soon. What I need to know is: with the intercooler, radiator, and oil cooler all sandwiched together, what's the best way to optimal cooling efficiency from all of them? Here's my idea, please feel free to tell me what you think or share your setup.

1. Replace stock cooling fan with SPAL electric fan and mount radiator at a 45 degree angle, bottom closest to the engine. (Rad. is already at an angle, I'd probably make some brackets to angle it more)

2. Fabricate metal undertray to flow cool air under the intercooler and into the radiator, so it's not just getting leftover air from the intercooler. This could also be done with plastic ducts, similar to brake cooling ducts, if the undertray isn't feasible.

3. (If necessary) Remove stock oil cooler and install square-shaped oil cooler in area where the fog light would normally be.

4. Install a vented hood to vent the hot air out of the engine, rather than the stock hood allowing cool air in and creating turbulence.

Well, what do you think?

yeah that would work. is it still a stock rad? if you want a real trick setup, do dual oil coolers in the brake vents and run a vmic with a heat extractor hood

You can use 4 computer cooling fans for the oil cooler. Mount them on the back side and wire them to pull.

I guess I could try a v-mount, but because I'm going to be getting a GReddy FMIC, boost controller, turbo timer, and BOV for $450, it makes sense for me to just have it front-mounted. Plus I know my car was equipped with a front-mount at one point, because the front bumper was cut and there were brackets there when I got the car. The cooling fans for the oil cooler could work, too.

I'm not entirely convinced that computer fans would be the most durable thing to use on a car... since computers were never intended to be in the rain. Or even extreme humidity, for that matter...

Not to mention the fact that most PC fans have very low CFM capabilities.

Excuse the stupid noob question, but exactly is a v-mount IC? Is it 1 or 2 I/C's?

Mount your intercooler and radiator so it looks like a V.

These fans move serious air. With the 80mm fan you can hover a CD over 6 inches above the fan, that is no lie. I have 5 of the 80mm fans in my computer. They are turned down to their lowest settings. They are pretty loud for computer case fans. Like fuckin hair dryers really, it might sound like your turbo is spooling at idle if you use them on your oil cooler. :D

If you decide to use these fans on your oil cooler I'd use a fan controller like this one.

It could be mounted in the center console right next to a boost controller or other devices. For normal street driving you could keep the fans low but then crank them up for track time.

For the price of these fans ~$15 shipped I wouldn't worry too much about using them in the rain, they are cheap to replace. Besides, how much driving in the rain do most modded turbo guys do?

So for about $85 shipped you could have a pretty insane oil cooler setup. It may be a good idea to look into some type of shroud but it may not be necessary.

I've been contemplating removing these fans from my computer cause they are too loud sometimes. I may just do this oil cooler mod myself! HAHA! What are the dimensions of the oil cooler? Which would fit better 80mm or 92mm?

I would go with the 92mm fans. I believe the height of the oil cooler is 4". :)

Computer fans would last about 5 minutes underneath a car... :)

Not too much help in your case i guess but. I am getting ready to add a body kit and FMI(as well as all the turbo stuff) to my '90 N/A. What i want to do (havent got the kit yet to see if it will work) is mount the intercooler in the wide open space in the middle (duh) and then for the oil cooler, i plane to use some fiberglass and a couple of those re-positionable air intake hose/pipes form autozone/advance/oreilly etc. and make the two smaller side piece a ram air setup of sorts...

You could do pretty much the same thing with a stock bumper as well...

Spal makes a 4 inch fan for motorcycles that would work great for an oil cooler (if your using the 4 inch cooler)

physics just doesn't seem to agree with a radiator mounted at such an angle. it seems like the best results would come from placing it perpendicular to the direction of incoming air (as in, straight up?)

i think the efan is a good idea, though....and the oem oil cooler. i don't think vented hood will do a ton for you, and honestly i don't know if the fabbed duct will work well in that area

Actually with a v-mount, the intercooler and radiator make a < shape so it traps every bit of incoming air.
