I'd check out the power steering pump if you got one, the steering rack, the front suspension.

I hope it isn't an axel that I need

I went out to the car this morning and turned the steering wheel ,
the steering wheel turned but the wheels didn't. Anyone have an idea of what it might be??? Thx! |
tie rod or another similar part of your steering linkage
|
you might try just one sig post per thread..

Originally posted by 4RotorRocket power steering has been removed by previous owner im pretty sure It's hard to say what it is, just chock the rear wheels, pull the E-brake to lock the rears even more, then put the front end up in the air and take a looksie at it. As long as *both* front wheels are up in the air and the rear is chocked properly (and the car won't roll at *all*), have a buddy turn the wheel while you lay *in front* of the car (NOT under it) and watch the steering linkage do its thing, see if it moves or not. Heck, I've never heard of it, but maybe the steering rack went kablooie, who knows. But more than likely sounds like a tie rod end or a ball joint was going bad and finally went. Or possibly even a ball joint on the control arm, it's hard to say without more info. I still miss that car. |
tighten your lug nuts.
|
THe other week i got outta was driving my car and i kept on hearing a Thump Thump Thump. i got home and went to check what the hell was wrong, turned out someone jacked 2 of my lugnuts and loosened the other 3.... And i know i put them on very tight.... I checked all the other wheels and they were ok. Scared the piss outta me! But for the no steering part, id say tierod.

Originally posted by VietFC tighten your lug nuts. I'm pretty sure his wheels would turn when he turns the steering wheel even if there was just 1 lug nut on the wheel. I'm not sure though. I'd have to check. |
if it's the tie rod, most likely your tires would be pointed in 2 different directions.
If you didn't have power steering, you would know it. I had the power steering belt fly off while driving... makes big noise, and the steering became very heavy. If the steering wheel turns, and the wheels don't, then it is something with the steering column. Only way to check, is to jack it up and look at it. It would be very obvious. |
Ive been waiting for a thread like this to put out a warning to all of those who've removed their power steering pumps, and removed the hoses from the top of the gear box...If you feel your steering starting to "catch" a little every now & then, read on...
And, 4RotorRocket, if it's not something simple like a tie rod, or someone jacking your lug nuts (lol), you might want to check this out... There is a needle bearing in the middle of the gearbox down there that doesn't like having pressurized power steering fluid removed from it, and sooner or later, it will take a crap. When it does, the "needles" will start jamming up the hydraulic valve that turns inside the gearbox, and your steering WILL lock up, when you least expect it to (yes, I do have first hand experience with this, lol) The only solution to this problem is to remove the rack from the car, remove the valve assy, and remove all the "needles" from the bearing. After this, remove all intermediate ring seals from the valve body, to free up any hydraulic fluid "lock" that might occur. If you wish to leave some fluid in the system to lubricate the valve and rack pistons, and the 2 ball bearings that remain in the system at either end of the valve assy, you may do so.. (I just repacked the valve with bearing grease, and packed the piston bores with graphite based assy lube, it's worked well now for a while, probably better than thin power steering fluid would have) 4Rotor, your problem might also be the bushing "block" that pushes against the rack to keep it down & against the gear teeth from the servo valve. The bolt that holds all this stuff together is on the top front of the gearbox, with the big washer under it. Make sure it's still down & tight... |
well i'll really dig into it tomorrow today was a rainy day & I have no garage.
I went to the front of the car and laid down looking by both of the wheels , the front left seems to have something disconnected |
Damn, how often do tie-rod ends break on these cars?
Not counting the guys that hit curbs :) |
