What the hell is that noise?

after driving my car for like 10 minutes straight it starts to make a beeping noise that goes like "beep.beep.beep.beep.beep." 5 consecutive beeps then a 2 second delay then another 5 consecutive beeps and it doesnt ever go away and no lights come on. what could be wrong?

have you done anything recently like remove your powersteering? If so there is a little metal box under the dash that needs to be removed. If thats not the answer but your not seeing any lights, thats prob a sign of mazdas wonderfull saudering, just check all of your fluids and see if that makes a difference.

i didnt remove anything the car is 100% stock exept that i cut out the cat yesterday. almost all the wiring in my car is really ghetto rigged. there is a tiny little wire running from the top of the alterator directly to the positive on the battery and its worn in half from rubbing on the pulley, i really doubt this wire does anything but wasnt sure if i should take it off.

chris-reedtn 11-02-02 01:12 AM

uummm, do you mean that the wire that charges the batt, is not going to the fuse block and is rubbing on something that is grounded??? Not SSSSSSSOOOOOOO not a good thing, that may cause a fire!

[G o a T S L o n G] 11-02-02 01:15 AM

there is 2 wires on the alternator one pretty thick one that runs towards the firewall and one tiny little speaker wire size wire that some one twisted up with the thick one that runs directly to the battery.

chris-reedtn 11-02-02 01:39 AM

that doesn't sound right to me, you otta atleast replace that wire and get it off the pully,

Your beeps:

Your charging sys wiring (how to restore/improve it - dead easy):

I ran new wire from:
-my battery ground to the chassis using a bolt, a large washer, and ground down to the sheetmetal.
-my batter + to the starter terminal, clean the starter connection when doing so
-my alternator + post to the starter + terminal
-the fusebox main power supply (underhood 80A fuse) to the starter + terminal
-the starter frame(engine) to the chassis, cleaning and grinding both surfaces down to bare metal.

Then I ditched all teh stock wiring left over. You have now rewired your entire main charging circuit. Simple isnt it?

IF youre keeping stock battery location, do the above with new battery cables and terminals. Keep the connections clean. Replace every wire and connector(total cost less than $50) and you'll get a LOT of power in return.

So, what do I see now?

daytime cruise 15vdc on the highway, 14.5 at idle, 14+ at night with all the lights on. BIG difference. Helps a lot with starting/flooding issues on the engine too, when the starter can actually kick the engine over pretty hard, it starts on teh first rotation.
His results are with a brand new alternator. I followed his instructions with my old rebuild and also noticed and improvement. Not as good as his, but at least better than before.

And get rid of that small wire that's being rubbed by the pulley. You won't need it if you follow the above instructions.

Get rid of that small wire! Now! You don't want to cause a fire.

The beeps sound like a problem with the power steering. Make sure all electrical connections are tight and good, check belts for slippage, refill fluid, etc. etc.

my voltage is always at 16 no matter what. today i cut that stupid wire off and now my interior lights and radio and shit dont work.

my car beeps the same way, and it goes away after i put the car into gear and drive. check the level of your power steering fluid. when my car is beeping, i dont have power steering cause there is not enough fluid.

I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM!!

O.k man, i have the exact same problem, i contacted mazda, they dont know what it is, and my local rx7 mechanic doesnt either. Do me a favor, check something for me, when moving or stopped, turn the wheel all the way to either side and see if the beep stops. Mine does, the 5 beep pause is from the power steering computer, but i dont know what it is trying to tell me!!!!
umm i'm not to sure, but i think it might have something to do with the fact the previous owner of my car hit a curb and the alignment is off! do me Huge Favor and let me know what happens. And if you fix the problem please let me know what you did!
thanks!

READ THE LINK I POSTED.

RX-7Impreza has been all through the p/s beeps. His thread beats the hell out of the topic. His extensive troubleshooting and final resolution are all in there. Read it!
