What is a good coilover kit?

Hey club. I have been shopping around for coilover kits and i do not know what is recomended at this point. Kits I have came across so far: Tein, Megan, BC, etc. These are all good. but I am loookin for something not too pricey and worth gettting over my stocks. POSSIBLY ADD 1-2" DROP. I do DD and mild touge runs every now and then.

So I want to ask you guys... what is RECOMMENDED?

You'd be better off without coilovers. (Overkill for the street.) - I say this because the car is your daily driver, you don't race on a track, and you occasionally do mild touge runs. If you're looking for cheap, slap-on coilovers... Then go with any of the ones you've already named. You're bound to get PLENTY of opinions when it comes to this particular subject. Be prepaired for, "Tein is good!" or "Don't get Godspeed." or "I heard Megan are good." blah blah blah... Keep in mind that you'll have to buy camber plates and have them adjusted PROPERLY. Cheap + good quality coilovers do not exist.

You'd be more than pleased with KYB AGX or Tokico Illumina adjustable shocks, with either Tanabe or Racing Beat springs.

^^^ if you're just looking to get a 1-2" drop, he's right.. but if you ever wan a man up and really lower you're shit, i'd go megan or bc.. cheap and haven't heard to many bad things about them. just sold my twins and picked up megan tracks. and i like them. kyb's and rb springs would be far more comfortable as well

Off the shelve? HKS, Cusco... Heard good things about Stance, which is American, so easier for you. Stay away from the brands you named, they don't make proper stuff for FC. Tein MONO Flex (so not the CHEAPO flex) seem to be OK, but are not easy to get in the US I heard.

yeah serious. im tired of freaking what coilovers should i use. then after that oh but they cant be to expensive.... if thats the case get lowering springs.

Furb Mar 20, 2012 04:46 AM

Springs are for looks, coilovers for handling

You get what you pay for

If you want to play, you gotta pay

I think that sums it up quite well

Wait... What? LoL!

It's goes both ways with springs and coilovers...also just because your low doesn't always mean your going to have awesome handling. Also if your looking for a good daily coilover that can handle well go with ground controll. I'm running mine with Kyb agx with GC camber plates and custom spring rates. I piced mine together for about $800. That's with used camber plates and a good deal on the Kyb's.

Just slapping on some lowered springs on the stock dampers pretty much doesn't do shit for handling..
so they are basicly just for looks.

Tofuman FC3S Mar 20, 2012 10:08 AM

Thought you were saying springs are for looks in general... I was like WTF? Springs and shock combo is important, so a good shock with a matched spring will be good, whether it's coil-over or not.

i have a thread like this :( and it was only a year ago..

anyways.. i just sold my twins for megans. and let me tell you BEST TRADE EVER. i fuckin love my megans. 12kg fr, and 10kg rear. this is how coilovers SHOULD feel xD

Dr!freak Mar 21, 2012 09:05 PM

Well thanks guys. i will be getting what i pay'd for. KYB shocks with tanabe springs would be the best combination...i have been doing my research and not only you get that agresssive stance you get the handling AS WELL.

i'm sorry but i can guarantee my car will take a 100mph turn better than any spring shock combo xD.. but go for it, for some reason everyone said spring/shock combos are better for autoX. i can't see how copious amounts of body roll could be good for anything:scratch:

Im willing to bet you cannot take a 100mph turn.

Spring/shock combinations are underrated by too many people. If you're going to track the car, sure... Go coilover. For the occasional touge run and daily street driving that Dr!freak will be doing, KYB shocks and Tanabe springs will be much more than adequate. More affordable, too.

Dr!freak Mar 24, 2012 08:23 PM

Yes indeed. Thanks dwb87, i just want something more than my stocks

charlos Mar 24, 2012 09:15 PM

As I always ran european aftermarket shocks on all my cars, japanese shocks suffer from improper dampening, I would recommend Koni Yellows, although difficult to fine & the fronts aren't direct fit either, in previous car of mine they have been great. I wish the FC had more European companies offerings like the FD, but alas that's not the case.

If you're just looking for w/e drops you, KYB & Eibach/RB is a good bet.

I'm willing to bet he cannot either.

How many people with "coilovers" know how to properly tune the multitude of adjustments available to them? Unless the setup has been properly tuned, it's junk. Putting it as low as it will go on full stiff is not properly tuned.

And I know it's become shorthand now, but "ride height adjustable coilovers" is really the term that should be used. Stock suspension is coilover.

MIDNFauciUSN Mar 25, 2012 09:46 AM

I just put on the k-sport coilovers yesterday... like riding on a cloud!!

KSnapp Mar 25, 2012 10:03 AM

Half the people it seems who get coilovers have them for looks anyways. Lol...

There is a performance aspect behind shock and spring combinations... Not just for "drop".

Word... my S.Techs and AGXs didn't perform well when onloading onto a trailer (almost ripped my bumper, but caught it in time)... hence the coilovers.

R-X-R Mar 25, 2012 06:00 PM

i like my yellowspeed from protegegarage

Never said there wasn't. OP clearly says he wants 1-2in drop with some mild touge in mind, I suggested a affordable shock option, although terrible in my opinion, "KYB", & fairly price Eibach or RB.

I could also suggested some Penske's but then that would a bit ridiculous wouldn't it?
