What Does Your TII Idle At?

I have an 89' TII, and when i start it up, revs to 3k like normal, then goes down to about 1800/1700 and stays there, not sure if its a bit high or not. It doesn't seem to go any lower, after a while it comes down a bit, but not much, is that the normal idle point?

eViLRotor 08-22-03 12:41 PM

Usually, they should idle at around 750rpm. A lot of RX-7's seem to have a high idle problem, but 1700 is very high.

You should check the TPS, idle set screw and the idle stop screw...

I'm a total car n00b, how would I go about doing that?

Fitness Stain 08-22-03 12:50 PM

when mine was running, it stayed right around a 1000....little bit less, little bit more....it was a tad high, but not as high as some do i didnt worry about it too much

Bigretardhead 08-22-03 12:55 PM

mine idles around 650. it was actually idleing around 550 today, but still very smooth:)

ilike2eatricers 08-22-03 01:07 PM

Is putting electrical load on the car to drop the idle detrimental to any to the car? For example turning on the AC or headlights to help drop the idle? Sometimes the idle raises to 1000 and by turning on the AC for a second and then turning it off immediately drops the idle back to 700-800. What do you guys think?

razorback 08-22-03 01:43 PM

1700. but thats because of the bridgeport.

I love the way people just whore threads without helping out.

Anyway...

Boy, where do I start. You should get the Haynes Manual, or download the FSM. That will give you a reference...

The TPS is located under the Intercooler. Do a search on measuring resistance of the TPS with a voltmeter. You should adjust it to read 1k ohm at idle.

The BAC valve is located on the drivers side of the UIM. There is an idle adjust screw there. Again, use the FSM or Haynes.

The throttle stop screw should touched last (if at all). That is how I adjust my idle, but I don't have the BAC valve.

Its a small screw, sometimes held tight by a small metric nut. AFAIK, it sets how far the throttle plates are open at idle...thus increasing/decreasing idle rpm. Turn Counterclockwise to reduce idle speed...

It's on the passanger side. He has a TII. :D

My AE starts up and immediately idles at 820. Have the LT8 sure does help those damn idle problems that some FC's have...

PureSephiroth 08-22-03 02:02 PM

my idle

My car (88 TII) generally idles at about 2500 when it starts then goes down to about 1200. After about 5 minutes it drops down to 750. Are you waiting for the car to warm up completely because that could be the problem entirely?

Ni5mo180SX 08-22-03 03:15 PM

Idles at about 650 with about a 18rpm deviation at times. Thats with every piece of emissions equipment removed, no accessories and no BAC.

Ocelot 08-22-03 05:18 PM

I think I will wait until my dash is redone, because the idiot who wired it up before messed it up, and the rpms go up and down like 2k every time the blinker goes, and drops 1k when the lights are on. The engine you can tell is still going the same speed, its just the electronics. If it still is actually idling high after that, i'll try and use the way you suggested.

Snrub 08-23-03 09:28 AM

1500-1600-1500-1600-1500-1600 and so on. I have a leak in the intake ;)

Dan H 08-23-03 12:41 PM

Idles at ~700RPM when first starting up. When warmed up, idles at ~900RPM. (Reason for slightly high idle is because its running dog rich.) Running a Microtech LT8.

Previous owner had it idling at 400-500RPM on startup but it waaay to low that I would stall out easily when it was still a bit cold. Adjusted the throttle cable after that.

Idles like a rock at 600.

gsracer 08-23-03 02:42 PM

650

Ocelot 08-23-03 03:21 PM

I just drove it around for a bit, and realized that it starts that high, then after driving around a bit, when i'm stopped at lights and such, it idles at normal rpms, when i start it up I wait forever for it to drop though, but it never does until i drive around a bit.

Terrh 08-23-03 03:24 PM

1250-1950 bounce.. when its cold.. 3500

JasonL 08-23-03 03:57 PM

1100-1300, big streetport.

Plus a few vac leaks.

Sesshoumaru 08-23-03 09:01 PM

rock solid 750 after it's warmed. All emissions removed and BAC. It won't idle until it's warmed up

SonicRaT 08-23-03 09:14 PM

1000 flat

I thought you got that fixed?

Blowtus 08-23-03 10:43 PM

plenty of dodgy idles around isn't there...
if your idle doesn't drop once the cars warm, and you've not removed cold start gear, I'd be thinking the cold start is stuck on for some reason, and finding out why straight away...

mine starts at 1500, then after about 2 mins of full water temp it'll be down to a slightly wavering 700-750.
