What to do with MAF?
 

Well I installed a new cone filter into my '88 n/a a couple days ago, but after I removed the stock air box I found that the MAF jsut dangled there loosely. I temporarily had it hanging up there with zip ties, but now ive fabricated a little 90 degree elbow joint which allowed me to fasten it to one of the stock mounting holes the old air box was on.

what did everyone else do for theres? is there an easier and more effective way to keep it from dangling around in the engine bay?


and jsut on a side note, what would happen if you left your cats in and removed the air pump? and do you need to replace the air pump with an idler?

Fabricate brackets for it and attach the brackets to the frame.

Zip ties have been holding mine ever since I installed my cone. Brackets were used at first, but with all of the engine/ intake run movements during normal driving, a lot of stress is put on the brackets (which transfers the stress to the intake components if they're so solid they don't move). The zip ties allow movement to occur without stressing anything...

I also installed a piece of thick lexan from the radiator mounts on back past the AFM, up to the hood line, and down to the side rail, to create a "cold air" compartment, and the AFM rests up against it via a standoff bracket, which allows relative movement at that point too...

yeah ive got mine on a bracket with bolts, and then 4 big zip ties backing up the bracket system (theyre holding the bolts in place) in case the bols rattle loose

i have the apexi kit but since the brackets it came with are for the s5, i had to improvise and bend one a little and it now supports the cone part and attatchs the the chasis underneath it. with the rubber coupler i have the cone is pretty solid an the MAF floats there ok at just the right length. just installed it so after a few thousand miles ill check it and see if its floating apart or anything but it seems to work pretty well.

So ghetto. I had higher hopes for you Wayne.:)

When I HAD a MAF, I custom made some brackets. The flex in the line was enough to compensate for movement of the motor.

They work. They work better than solid brackets, IMO. I'd rather have the zip ties allowing movement than to transfer it to the 18 year old ribbed plastic intake ducting, or worse yet, the plastic elbow.

Sorry to burst your bubble of high expectations...
