What did our cars cost new?
I know there is a thread about this somewhere, but I cannot for the life of me find it.
I was looking at the prices of new cars, and I was wondering where an FC would fall. |
They were fairly expensive, at least talking S5. I have the original sales brochure for most model years. I think in 1990 a Turbo was ~26k, a GXL was 22k, and a base GTU was like 18,5.
|
I paid about $17,200 for my 1988 SE with a/c and sun roof, which is comparable to about $33,000 in 2012. The 10AE sold for about $24,500, which is comparable to about $47,000 in 2012. The other 1988 models were in the middle of the above pricing. As would be expected, the 1986-87 models were a little less, and the 1989-91 models were a little more.
|
i had the window sticker for my 87 GXL, and i believe it was $20,020. ABS was $1000 option.
you should adjust that for inflation, too, your 1987 dollars were worth a lot more than your 2012 dollars |
I have a mazda printout of suggested retail in Canada for several models for '89
My S5 vert , 5 speed is $40,190. here are the others: base , std. 21,590 GX std. sunroof, 25,890 GXL std sunroof - 29690 GXL auto sunroof - 30,590 GXL leather std sunroof,- 30,790 GXL auto leather sunroof, - 31,690 GXL 2+2 std sunroof - 33,690 turbo std sunroof, - 35,990 Turbo, leather std sunroof - 37,090 vert std leather CD, -40,190 vert auto, leather CD - 41,090 kind of amazing the vert was a 40,000 car . They really bumped it up for the extras I guess like Pioneer CD surround system ( this was a big deal as vinyl records were still being sold in '89 and I didnt own a CD home system yet myself , just cassettes and vinyl) , unique targa roof , BBS rims , Glass rear window , aluminum hood , VDI, headrest speakers, anti-theft , DTSS etc. ) |
I'll post these numbers, since the source seems to be in line with what others have posted who bought them new. This is straight from Sports Car Color History - Mazda RX-7 by John Matras. I'll just list a range of prices for various years and trims.
1986 - Base prices started at $11,995 and went up to $17,145 1987 - Turbo models started at $19,345 1988 - Non-turbos from $15,480 to $20,500 for a convertible. Turbos were around $21,800 and 10th AEs were $24,650 1989 - Non-turbos from $17,300 to $22,100. Turbos at $22,750. Convertibles at $25,950 1990 - No data listed 1991 - Coupe at $19,335, Turbo at $26,555 and Convertible at $27,715 As I alluded to, this data is non-verifiable, but seems to be pretty accurate based on prices that have already been listed. |
pfft, we've easily put those dollars back into our cars ;)

My S5 Vert was $27000 new. |

I understand the theory of paying off debt with increasingly smaller dollars. That theory presumes income rising at or above the rate of currency devaluation/inflation combined. Unfortunately your B-school educated boss has the inverse plan: Increase your pay at a rate below the rate of currency devaluation/inflation, because after all, he has a responsibility to share-holder value. :egrin: It also makes for difficult business environment if you are in a business that imports significant raw materials or finished goods from Canada. Glad I'm out of that these days. |

The difference on Canadian/US exchange late 80's early 90's was only about -15%; that said, the Canadian market has commonly had +20-40% higher list prices on similar/identical vehicles, even after accounting for exchange rates , thanks largely to lack of competition (basically, dealer/manufacturer collusion to maintain the price differentials). Surprisingly, this is still true of many models today, even with the ease of getting an American price off the web, although it is less the case for entry level models, but very true of higher-end cars.

The original owner of my '86 Sport paid $15157 in 1985.
