What causes power steering to turn off sometimes?

Twice, when I have been racing and a few times in a parking lot it has happened; I go to move the wheel and it is hard to move. Then after one second the power steering turns on and I end up jerking the wheel to far.

I am reading through the power steering manual

and was wondering if any one has sorted through this problem and found out what was wromg. There are so many components in the system I would like to save sometime figuring it out if someone could help me.

I have heard of power steering with speed sensor.

I have noticed on mine that sometimes it is stiffer, usually higher RPM or moving faster. Then when I slow down, it becomes easier to move.

I am pretty sure it has to do with power steering assist.

Hopefully you can figure it out. :)

Don't the S5s turn off the power steering when the steering wheel is inside 15deg from center for a while?

When I put an aftermarket wheel on my s4 the powersteering didnt work, but I put the stock back on and it worked. Weird.

Mine did that too, it seems to be a problem with the S5's turning fast at low speed. My fix worked perfectly, I took out the power steering and it's never given me a problem since!

I have a 1991 convertible. The system has several different electronic motors and valves on it. Check out the previous link and look under steering. No wonder the thing does not work right.
