WHAT is the BOOST SENSOR PILL for?

I was told about this, so I went to my Mazda dealership and ordered a new boost sensor vacuum line. Anyways, sure enough on their computer there is a tiny pill that you need for the line. So I got that too. Had to wait a few weeks for the SPECIAL ORDER, but its finally here and I just plugged it into my car. Just curious as to what the heck does this little pill with a tiny orifice in it does exactly?!

I believe it's to help prevent boost spikes.

It stops the boost signal from getting to the sensor too quickly, I noticed that once I put mine in line it got rid of a high rpm hesitation.

I'm pretty sure you don't need it if you have an fcd.

Without the boost pill inline you might experience alot of surging while driving.. also situations where on and off throttle application becomes harash..

it basically improves driveability..

By the way, you don't have to go to mazda to order the pill.. you can go to most auto parts stores, and purchase a vacume restrictor line.. you then just have to attach it inline with your boost sensor vac line...

Has anyone done this? Is this accurate info?

When I changed my Vacuum Lines to that of Silicone ones, I didn't put the pill back on. In fact, It was a year later I learned what It was. Sine than, I haven't put It back In and I don't experience any hesitation problems whatsoever.

The lack of a orifice will also effect a n/a car also. I put a new vac line on my n/a a couple of years ago and immediatley noticed a hesitation under heavy throttle. Went back and looked at the old vac line. It had yellow and blue paint stripes on it. Thats when I discovered the orifice.

You can SEE what happens if you want. Get a digital meter and tap into the brown red wire on the sensor. Get your mitty vac out and put it on the sensors nipple. Now rapidly apply pressure to the sensor with the mitty vac and watch the meter. What I've seen is, is a spike of over 3.7v on the meter and the meter drop instantly down to a figure below that. That was on the turboii that I did that without a fcd. Fuel cut is around 3.7. Get the picture?

Then again other people on this forum say they run without a orifice and have no problem what so ever.

EDIT: That test above was without a orifice.

I think their Is another orfice...In the Brake Booster. Didn't replace that too when I changed my Vacuum Lines. Maybe I should.

i found a pill type thingy in my wastegate line, what purpose does it serve. oh yeah, its an 89+ turbo.

if the pill restricts the boost from getting to the sensor as quick it probably does the same sense on your wastegate.. the wastegate doesn't see as much boost are you're putting out not sure how much extra boost that'ld be good for but it'ld catch up and bring it back into spec.

I don't think there is one in the brake booster line .. that would make no sence to me. I have never seen one in any other car .. and brake systems are brake systems for the most part. I ordered a stock brake booster line from my local mazda dealer today infact .. it should be in on Thursday. I will let you know for sure then. I re did my brake line on my S4 turbo .. but the bend I made has caused a kink and I am loosing brake boost power... so I order the correct pre bent line today. I also ordered the orifice & boost presure line to be safe.

Also a orifice did not show up on the parts diagram for the brake booster... but it was clearly visable on the same diogram for the boost sensor line.

I made my "pill" out of a bead for making neclaces! Works fine! Resourcefull huh!?

fastrotaries 10-08-02 01:16 AM

man my car used to buck like a mofo. Checked everything, and then i realized, it was that. In the end i just bought a Haltech.......Screw that pill.

I got my lines in from Mazda today ... what direction and how far down the hose do I put the orifice in the boost sensor line? Can someone check there's for me please.

The orifice (pill) is shaped like a bullet ... towards what side do i point the pointed end?

Thx all

silverrotor 10-11-02 05:04 PM

I believe towards the Boost Senor Itself as I was told before. Check with others for confirmation.

Nope, none at all.

Can anyone confirm the direction of the boost orifice?

Felix Wankel 10-12-02 12:01 PM

Its a check valve in the brake booster line, not a restritiction. I don't think an NA will have one.
