what is better a apexi s-afc or a hks afr

i have a non turbo rx-7 and wanted to know which one is better i think people say the hks is better you can do more with it and the apexi just looks good. And maybe put some turbo II injectors in.

Basically they all do the same thing. I have the Apexi SAFC tuned to my car. It sits all lit up in the glove box for everyone to not see cause its kinda stupid, "Why do you have that??", "Oh thats cause the stock ECU sucks ass."

I kinda like the s-afc....neat to watch the throttle position, air flow, and rpm. CJ

You will never need 550cc injectors. Never.
You'll get more power by leaning out your stock ones.

I have a S-AFC and I like it. Never had a HKS so I can't tell you which one is better but from the look of it every one goes with the S-AFC

There is one in the for sale section for $320 shipped, not sure hwo much it cost at the stores but seems like a good price. Said it was still in box.

I've got the HKS AFR. I chose it over the Apexi because its more versitle, less flashy and $15 cheaper. I dont need some punk thinkin I have a $600 stereo system breaking into my car again, and I need as much tunability as possible for my upcoming project.

rx-7fc 05-13-02 12:32 AM

so the hks has is more tunability than the apexi

I have never used the HKS unit, but the S-AFC worked REALLY well in my FC. A little flashy, but it DEFINITELY works great.

The S-AFC works by interrupting the maf signal to the ECU into thinking that you have either more or less air going into the engine. You can set it via RPM's, which you can change to whatever RPM's you need, and has a high and low throttle setting.

Very Good unit IMO

no experience with the hks, but the apexi was pretty easy to install...say about 2hours taking my time. still gotta take it somewhere to get tuned though :-(

i am concerned that it is a flashy thing, so i'm trying to figure out how to hide it, but still have it visible.

Yes, the HKS has 11 adjustable RPM points to tune that can be set in 50 rpm increments, when the Apexi has only 8 points adjustable in 500 rpm increments. The HKS allows for much more precise tuning. Another reason I chose the HKS is size... its tiny. About the size of a mini disc player.

Does the HKS monitor injector duty cycles? Thats the main reason I wanted a S-AFC, my injectors have to be close to maxing out.

No, it doesnt... I was hoping it would too but I'm sure if you really need to know, you could rig something to figure it out. Prolly just need a voltmeter going to the injectors, and to know how much voltage is required for a certain duty cycle.. Pretty much the same thing the S-AFC does I imagine...

I'll just watch the EGT's. I've never really cared for the way the S-AFC looked myself.

Its easy... Takes about an hour or so... And I have a non turbo for now... I begin turbocharging it as soon as I replace the clutch in my beater truck.

Therx7ist 05-21-02 09:15 PM

hey drakkor, I just got my super afr today but the wiring diagram for the ecu is only for a turbo. how did you get this hooked up?

capsoval 05-22-02 04:37 PM

Just in case anyone wanted to know I found a place that sells the s-afc second gen. for $275.00. The web site is www.gt-sport.com.
