what is a 13B?

i was just wondering what a 13b engine is, what cars it comes in and where i could get it if i didn't have an RX-7 with it already in it. any help would be appreciated.

a 13b is the naturally aspirated version of the 2nd generation RX-7 rotary engine. As far as finding one goes, I'm not sure there's a Jspec 13b, because all 2nd generation RX-7s were Turbos in Japan. You might try Ebay, or just getting a 13BT and pull the turbo off, leaving you with a high compression 13B, which should be a little bit more powerful than a normal 13B. Anyone else know a good source of 13B engines? A junkyard maybe?

13B is the engine in your RX-7 (hopefully) ...as far as I know, the RX-7 is the only car to get the 13B and 13BT, but the 13B-RE was available in JDM Cosmos (as well as the very tasty 20B). The 13B-REW is the engine from the 3rd gen RX-7s...

Why is it that you want one??

These are all Mazda codes:

13B = 1.3L Twin Inline Rotary
-came in all non-turbo 2nd gen RX-7's (1986-1991, FC3S) and the 1985 1st gen (FB3S) in trim line GSL-SE
-1986-88 had 146hp
-1989-91 had 160hp

13BT = 1.3L Twin Inline Turbocharged Rotary
-Came in all Tubo TII RX-7's (1987-1991) and the 10th anny edition RX-7 (1988).
-1987-88 had 182hp
-1989-91 had 200hp

13B-REW = 1.3L Twin Sequential Turbocharged, Twin Inline Rotary
-came in all 1993-1995 (3rd Gen, FD3S) RX-7's
-all had 255hp.

well steve, a 13BT actually has LOWER compression than a 13B... and therefore would have less power when naturally aspirated... :D

how much horsepower can you get out of a 13b? and can you easily put a turbo on it?

Lol, I went back and read a conversation I had about 9 months ago, before I ever owned a rotary, and reread the part where this guy and I had talked about compressions numbers and turbos, and you're right... lol, all this time operating on the assumption that my 13BT de-turbo'd would run a better compression, D'oh! :p:

Not to mention it's missing a couple of ports ;)

well, a 13B is basically the engine code, like 2jz, sr20, B18, B16, K22...you got the point right? All 2nd gens came w/ 13B 2 rotor fuel injection. The 13 stands for the displacement (each rotor has a displacement of ~ .65L)

13B's actually displace the equivalent of a 2.6L 6 cylinder because they fire 2 times per complete revolution of the eccentric shaft (does same job as a crank shaft)

12A's came in the 79-85 models except the GSL-SE in 85 (may also include 84'..im not as knowledgable about the 1st gens yet) I believe almost all 12A's came carborated..i hear that some were hybrid and had FI..but not too sure.

20B's use the 'same' rotors as the 13B's, but its a 3 rotor....most beautiful engines ever made that sold to the public.

26B is a 4 rotor monster machine. Only to be seen made by mazda for the 787B racecar.

13B's can make it up to around 400hp without going crazy w/ bridgeports, massive street ports, machined dowel pins, upgraded apex seals, and all the goodies. Talk to soul assasin about his..what..600hp bridgeported 2nd gen? he'll let you know exactly whats needed to go that high...im not as knowledgable since ive never even come close. Evil Aviator is a VERY informative and nice 20B specialist if your interested in that.

Thought i'd just sputter for a bit :)

how hard it is to put a 13B-REW into an 87-89 RX-7? it's has been done before right??

darkwaveboi 08-01-02 09:15 PM

hmm..where is CYM FC3s.

Yes, you CAN put a REW in a 2nd gen. BTW: they made them from 86-91 (there are a few 92's)

There is a lot of complicated shit with the REW's...i think there are fitment issues w/ the twin turbos, and its all around not a very inexpensive thing to do. If it were, you'd see more 2nd gens around w/ REW's...but the FD engines ARE stronger all around. Use the search to learn...this topic has been discussed fully..

what would you suggest doing?
