Some guy has a forum saying his 2nd gen weighed in and 2100 pounds? this even close? I have a 86 n/a gxl and i figured mine weighed atleast 2700

if you completely stripped it, I'd imagine it would weigh that much.

I think the S4 NAs were ~2750lbs and the S5 Nas were ~2850lbs

My RX is 2187 lbs...

What weight redux did you do exactly. You running a one rotor, no glass, carpet, doors, no body!? WTF?


S5na is around 2800lbs GXL models a bit more.

Its really not hard to get the car to 2000lbs.

Just remove everything that has no real purpose and you will hit real close to 2000 lbs...

PS: the weight of my car is with all the sound material still intact all the undercoating.. full dash and cd player.. with one speaker...

I think the curb weight of my 88 GTU from the factory was something like 2625 lbs. I'm trying to get it down to 1900lbs gutted and race ready.

according to the little service manual in the glove box the weight of the vert is less than the coupe. I know that the vert is heavier; maybe it was a misprint, or maybe I'm just reading it wrong. And as far as your car weighing in at anything under 2600 pounds; unless you have recently removed everything not welded down; you are well above that.

An 86 base model with an aluminum hood and no sunroof weighed in at 2645. that is the closest car to under 2600 pounds and it wouldnt be hard to acheive that with little removed things that you wouldnt notice...

In this case it does appear to be possible to get under 2600 pounds. But the car in question is an 86 gxl whichh would be much harder to get under 2600 without removing some everyday comforts.

Its pretty easy to take a lot of weight out of a car if you aren't going for confort. I for one am not one to disbelieve right off the bat.

I assume GLHS that you have weighed the car and that is what it came out to.

Samps don't make such general pronouncements. Its really not neccessary and just stirs up trouble.

In no way was my info generalized. If you chose to only read half of the thread you might have missed that his car is an 86 gxl which is a luxury model with many options. In an 86 gxl you would need to remove a good bit of stuff to get under 2600 pounds. The power steering and ac combined do not weigh a whole lot. Throw in the spare and jack and you're still not there. See what I mean?

GLHS, how did you come up with the 2187 weight?
was it done on a scale?

There is no way to get a 2nd gen that light. A friend of mine has an ITS 2nd gen and it still weighs like 2400#. It has NOTHING in it, light exhaust tubing, light wheels no dash, interior, bumpers, lights, 1 racing seat etc.

Remember that the ITS car HAS to weigh 2680 with the driver in it, so we can't strip everything we'd like to strip..

Still, my ITS car weighs 2450 with 8 pt cage, so 2200 is doable for a totally stripped car. But that's not a street car any more.

My 88 GX with sunroof, i think steal hood.. it seems heavier than my friends hood, and uhhhm... I dunno a couple of subs and a tool box, no spare or jack, came in at something like 2650.. oh I have swaped third gens seats in my car too.

I'll buy that, but a totally stripped car would not have a dash, cd player and sound-deadening...

Could you post some pics of your car and a list of what you took out?

My 86 base with aluminum hood and some mild dieting weighs 2400# and still has full interior and spare plus some additional goodies. I'd say without removing structural material 1900 would be a real chore.

I'd like to see some pics too.

Listen guys.. I just had the car weighted on a scale at the yard..

My friend has pictures of the inside of my car..if he still has them..He may even have the pics of my sneaky pete setup..

Anyways...I may have removed thing you others have not.. Headlight motors. Tow hooks" all 6 of them" heat shields. Various areas under the hood that the sawzaw did some magic too and I have 2 4" cold air ducts running through what I cut out of each each side of the radiator and the front bulkhead.

I also removed alot of metal in front of the fenders on the inside, allows for more air flow in engine compartment.

I removed the compsite bumpers and also removed the brackets that they bolt to and I also cut the car metal that was there to hold the bracket.. very heavy shit around these areas.

I also removed all the normal things. ACV. Belt fan, shroud. Things like this.. PS, A/C....

I still have things like Charcoal canister. factory seats and seat belts for both.. CD player. Dome lights still there, one sun visor left. Rear view mirror still in tact. Only driver side door skin, other is gone. Both outside mirrors are still on.

Entire dash and glovebox, still in the car. I still have the shifter surround and the armrest and storage bin under your arm.

All the sound deadener is still there all under coating, all the inner fender wells.

In my .02 cents its not stripped yet..but you can tell its been worked on.

Jesus...I hope to god you never hit anything GLHS. You'll be folded up like used gum in a wrapper.

Got me thinking though,
There's three or four bolts that hold the stering wheel on...who needs all those? One should do. three bolts for the shifter too..don't need them, gravity should hopld it down, right? Heck, the seats have four bolts each, that's a half pound right there!

GLHS, You cut away inner fender material for better flow? I don't think you really understand how unibody construction produces a structure capable of not needing a sepparate frame. If you attempt to road race that car it will most likely twist on you.

How many of you swiss cheesed your ecu covers? ;) Shaved off 1/3 the weight of that thing while still maintaining its integrity. Side by side comparisions of a stock one and mine are pretty eye opening.

I have an 88 GXL and I had it weight last week at 2610 without me, and about 1/2 tank of gas. I still have all interior minus the rear carpet, and padding. Steel hood, 18's, sunroof, 2 seats...well you get it. I have taken alot from under the hood and from the rear of the car. My goal is 2500 with me(160). To achieve this i have sparco non-adjustable seats, sunroof filler plate, lighter 17's, CF hood, convert all electronics in doors to manual. But I am also putting in a chromoly 4point...so that is added weight. What do you think? Im at 2610 right now. With me, the roll bar and swapping out all that for lighter equiptment is 2500 with me possible?

I read somewhere else on this forum that electric windows weigh less or about same as manual windows, take that with a grain of salt, but may not be worth conversion anyway

You guys are quite funny... But I am not that anal about the weight to make the car unsafe. If you think that crappy plastic bumper gonna save you, well then I hope so..

The metal I removed is not for structure strength. It allows for the 4" ducts to pass into the engine compartment.

The really funny part is I am copying a car that my friend has and SCCA races it and he has same areas cut out.


The best part about this weight reduction is I get better gas mileage than when the car was new.
