weight of flywheel? wtf?

Racing beat says the stock flywheel is 17lbs... http://www.racingbeat.com/resultset....rtNumber=11465

The weight of the stock flywheel is 17 lbs compared to 12 lbs for the Racing Beat flywheel.
But when i got my flywheel in the mail (stock) that i used for my 5 speed swap it sure as hell was heavier than 17 lbs. Whats going on?

And then it says the stock flywheel weighs 22 lbs here.

The weight of the stock flywheel is 22 lbs (89-92) compared to 17 lbs for the Racing Beat Flywheel.
What the hell? Come to think of it, i think mine was 30 something lbs.

I didnt purchase an aftermarket one yet. I didn't think the stock one needed a counterweight

RXciting 04-17-04 12:21 PM

i'm pretty sure they all come with counterweights?

DEZERTE 04-17-04 12:36 PM

oh ok, well anyways. why does racing beat say the stock flywheel is 2 different weights?

RexRyder 04-17-04 12:53 PM

You miss read there info. This is off the racing beat web site.

The weight of the stock flywheel is 24 lbs compared to 17 lbs for the Racing Beat Flywheel. The actual reduction in inertia from stock is much greater than the weights suggest, since the stock flywheel is 1 to 2 inches thick at its outside edge
They have a steel one that is 17lbs and an aluminum one that is 12lbs, but I don't see anywhere that says the stock one is 17lbs. Different years of stock flywheels weigh different amounts. See the chart at mazdatrix. http://www.mazdatrix.com/faq/flywheel.htm

Under every other flywheel they list (stock N/A, TII, S4 and S5) they show the correct weight. Looks like someone fat-fingered the keyboard when they typed that up.
