Weekend Maitainance Planning, Suggestions please
Hi all, planning changing my motor oil this weekend. The OMP is removed and running premix. What kinds/brands of motor oil I should use for the oil change?
Should I do a H2O decarbon prior to that? How often we can do this? The car got a short shifter, and it is hard to put in gear especially reverse, anyone used GM Syncho Fluid in their tranny, is that gonna work at all? It did wonders for my previous cars. What kinda LSD fuild people suggest to use? Any other things I can do? |
castrol GTX or Mobil 1 depending on what you want to spend for motor oil
10w30 winter 20w50 summer H2O decarbon is a once a year thing usally for those who do it. redline tranny fluid is the best IMO. |
I am thinking about synthetic oil, since the OMP is removed, is that a good idea?
Is H2O treatment gonna hurt the turbo? |
Castrol GTX 20w50 motor
Redline tranny & rear |
Motor:
10w30 N/A, 20w50 turbo 10w30 should be good up to 80 degrees. 20w50 should be good down to 20 degrees (maybe 0 or 10, I forget). If you have mild weather or if you use synthetic, you can use one oil year round. Castrol GTX is good mineral oil. For synthetic Royal Purple gives lowest friction (slightly better HP & mpg), AMS oil stays cleaner for ridiculously long oil drain intervals (N/A only, with AMS oil filter), and Mobil 1 is cheaper but still excellent stuff. The FAQ lists other good oils as well. Oil Filter: Anything except FRAM/Penzoil/Quakerstate is decent enough. PureOne is really good but restrictive (make sure you change your oil & filter on time or it might clog up). Mobil 1 and AMSoil are really good and non-restrictive, but expensive. Tranny: According to extensive user feedback within forums: Some reduced grinding, some made for easier shifting. Redline (and some others) did the latter only. Neo and Royal Purple do both. I'd assume the same for the diff. You'll also get slightly more HP from Royal Purple. |
Searching for Royal purple dealers around .... Never tried them, used Castrol GTX 20/50 and 10/40 all the way, since the OMP is removed, I want to try some difference things. We will see how much difference I can feel.

Pep Boys usually has a limited stock of Royal Purple. Or you can order it online. AMS oil is online only. You can always call various auto stores and ask. With only an extra 2HP or so & 0.5mpg or so from Royal Purple, you probably won't notice it.

Either Castrol GTX (10w30/20w50), or Royal Purple synthetic (20w50). I wouldn't use anything else ... But beware, if you DO make the choice to go synthetic, you can't ever go back..unless you tear down everything, and blast out the oil cooler / all lines / the engine.
Not worth it IMO, If I ever blew an oil cooler line and needed to buy a MASS amount of oil to keep pouring in, its not likely that I will find a nice synthetic at the everyday parts store. Tranny, Redline MT-90...and Redline 75w90 w/ friction modifier in the rear differential. Again..wouldn't use anything else. If your seriously devoting the entire weekend to maintenence :-D Theres a lot more you can do! :) |
How many more oil topics to we need? Really?
