weak links in drivetrain
ok so i have a few questions about my S4 rx7 turbo. im new to drag racing, i just built my S4 rx7 with huge T4 turbo and all the other goodies. i put down 405 @15psi and im soon to tune it to 20psi on alcohol injection. my concerns are the tranny, rear diff and axles. i bought a set of M/T slicks for it and i plan on making some hard launches so what do i need to do to my tranny and everything else to hold up to the abuse of high RPM launches? im currently running stock tranny and diff
|
well congrats on the build first, sounds like some decent power man. Pics?
Secondly, I would at least try to get low mileage replacements or remanufactured axles, I broke one when it was stock. I actually was told that they don't make new or reconditioned axles for the TII anymore...can any else verify this? The diff can probably be rebuilt or upgraded to the Kaaz, you might actually have a legitimate cause for going with the Kaaz. |
are you talking about the stub shafts that go into the diff or do you mean the cv type axles? and whats the difference between the three differnt types of kaaz lsd's?...here are a few pics

Im referring to the CV type axles.
The 3 kinds are different types of lock up, I believe it explains them on the site. Most guys I have seen are using the 1.5 way. Nice car man, nice. What light kit is that one? And what about the alternator relocation mount, is that custom or can i find one for me somewhere?? |
the headlights are a one off set i made out of fiberglass and about 40 hours of labor..lol.. the alternator relocation bracket is sold by pinnapple racing but i just looked on there site and couldnt find it..its so nice having it down out of the way plus you never have to worry about the belt slipping on the waterpump.
i think im most concerned with the tranny cause ive already blown on out with my old setup that only made 250WHP. im hard on trannies ive been thru 4 in my N/A vert and i in my T2 |
The FE tranny (RX8) is well capable of holding that power but its quite a conversion.
|
i mentioned that im installing the mmr mounts and MS front mount
|
oh sry that was in a differnt thread lol.. does anyone know if there is any upgraded stub shafts or half shafts on the market?
|
yeah i posted this in that section too but not really any responses
|
I run 10s in the quarter, with 1.5 60 foots and 25 PSI of boost on ET Streets. I have:
1. Stock Tranny 2. Stock Half Shafts 3. Mazdacomp diff mount 4. 6-puck clutch. The stock TII running gear is HARDY to say the least. |
by running gear do you mean first gear? how much whp are you putting down? what RPM do you usually launch at?

i havent run it yet. this upcoming season will be the first on this new setup

Nice car. I have the Greddy FMIC too. I ended up cutting a little bit off that pipe going to the throttle body to create more clearance for the brake mc resivoir. Its hard to tell from the pic, is your piping touching the mc?
|
no cause i made a bracket to attach to the alumminum tab on the pipe. it pulls it over far enough to clear

497 Wheel HP, and I launch at 6200 RPM on a 2-step. |

You can also go with straight cut gears if you want. They also have semi helical sets too. |

Its part of the Haltech.
|
oh ok. have you had any bad expiriances with that? i dont know about haltech but i run a microtech and was told that it may cause engine damage if you use it alot. apparently it cuts alot harder then a soft cut msd box

that is a gigantic oil feed line for that turbo. I run 4AN with a restrictor. And does your oil return line back up with it shaped like that, the way it drops down and comes up? Btw, what turbo and manifold do you have? That's definately bigger than my T04S.
some people install a pinion snubber for the diff to reduce wheel hop. I may do that when my stock diff mount finally breaks. |
Depends, you can select fuel or ignition. Either way, you are drag racing, a few seconds on the 2-step as the lights are coming down is the least of your worries.

I've never installed a pinion snubber, but I think they are actually a pretty cheap mod but you have to drop your diff of course. Maybe someone else can post up. I've done a few searches on it but I don't know the details on its installation.
