waterpump problem?
So I have an s5 TII, and the car just started overheating the other day. I was driving on the highway, and all of the sudden my "add coolant" light flashes, and the temp starts to rise. By the time I was able to stop at a parking lot, the temp gauge is around 1/8 of the way down from the H. I let the car sit for about 2 hours, and then proceeded to remove the thermostat and add coolant, thinking my only problem was a stuck thermostat. I checked all my lines and hoses and had no leaks. However, the same problem occured on the way home, still overheating. I looked at it this morning, and added more coolant, however, it looked as if the coolant wasn't circulating, because my upper radiator hose was soft, and when I took the cap off by the block, there seemed to be a weak flow of coolant. Is it possible that my waterpump broke? Any other Ideas?

Yeah, it pumps water.
If your waterpump took a crap, usually they will leak around the weephole which is located in the center of the snout. Any leaking in or around the water pump area? If you are losing coolant then it has to go somewhere.. |
There was no leaking that I noticed, and I did look for it
I do know where the missing coolant went however, it shot out the overflow hose and all over the cowl cover. |
Bummer... Well then its either a fan issue or a thermostat issue.
You can test the thermostat using some hot water, or you can mosey over to the local Mazda dealer and fork over a measly 4 bucks for a new one. Testing the clutch fan is easy. When the car is good and hot, put your hand behind it. Should be forcing a lot of air. Rat |

For sure its your water/coolant system. I just recently bought my vert. Not knowing what the original owner serviced and later found a leaking water house gasket. i told myself might as well change all the water related parts ,for example the radiator house, thermostat,and pump,coolant etc. the reason for doing this is changing any of this parts, the coolant will or mostly be wasted. u don't wanna waste money on new coolant each time you change a coolant related part. also saves u time by doing every thing at once.

Guys, this thread is four years old. If he hasn't fixed it by now, it's probably not going to happen.
