you need a 180 degree Thermostat
E fans suck
and get a NEW water pump... none of that reman shit

do you have alot of performance upgrades? an e-fan is only a good idea for performace setups or weekend driver's so if your car doesn't fit those description i would stick with the stock fan clutch.

get a factory t-stat or one from mazdatrix, i don't think there is a variety of temp t-stats they are probably just 185 degree t-stats.

water pump i don't know, i haven't had one fail yet, they are probably just rebuilds so i would assume even a cheap one would work fine. be sure to replace the heater hoses too if they are fairly old, the one in the back of the motor tends to get soft where it meets the engine, i had mine burst yesterday..

Hi guys,

I'm also in bad need for waterpump due to leakage. Other than heater hose, is there any advice/tips? I read in another thread that it takes 2 hours for comfortable people, but I'm not sure. I have Haynes and factory manual, but I'm sure they don't cover the little stuff that makes life much easier...

p.s. I have '91 (s5) vert with all stock.
p.p.s. is e-fan the fan that isn't connected to the block (or whatever unit I forgot?) It looks much easier to work around the block without it.
p.p.p.s. the shop wanted $450 for changing the pump. I have only a few days, but still... that's a rip-off!

Thanks guys

nah, the water pump only takes like 1 hour... and the part is like 50 dollars from an autozone or something like them... that shop is jippin' yah

Note - When you pull the pump kit, the pump housing will want to come loose from the engine front plate.
You will want to RTV that seal when you reinstall the pump.

Thanks guys!

MIDNFauciUSN: Seriously? Autozone looks good with about $65 for store p/u. BTW, should I just ignore the picture on Autozone or Kragen for waterpumps? They look different without the 2 piping sticking out, and the manual doesn't indicate taking it apart further. Thanks for the warning!!!

SureShot: Thanks for the tip! I'll also get RTV at the same time.

IT'S PROBABLY BETTER TO OPEN ANOTHER THREAD, BUT HERE IT IS.

THANKS ALL FOR MAKING THIS FORUM REALLY HELPFUL!!! I'VE WORKED ON SEVERAL AREAS JUST FROM BROWSING AND HELPFUL INFORMATION EVERYWHERE!!!

THANKS!!!

yep, i had to go help my brother change his lower because it burst. and incase you ever wonder, it doesnt matter if the pump isnt going, alot of coolent will drain out of the lower nipple. so if someone tells you its ok to pull off the hose, because he engine isnt going and there shouldnt be any coolent running, watch out, because likely you will just get the fuck burnt out of your hands and have some sob laugh at you wile you yell in pain.....motherfucker

rrohtake 12-08-04 03:49 PM

Yeah, and the coolant it self burns you even it's cold. I got splashed all over my head when I pulled mine real hard, and I had to run to sink to wash it off. Actually I did the same thing with fuel filter, but that was entirely my stupidity.

You alright after the burn?

vicious525E 12-08-04 03:57 PM

oh ya, just blisterd up a little for a few days, the crappy thing was that there wasnt anything around us, so i just kinda had to whipe my hand off on my jeans and wait until we got home to wash it off. :)

rrohtake 12-08-04 04:07 PM

Gee, can't imagine how painful that must have been... burn and coolant... Man, that really sucks! When I got showered, I had to take my shirt off and work with sweat until I finished it and got home.

When I got gasoline, I still had to work with the same shirt, and had to go to Kragen. My GF's bro didn't want gas's smell in his car, he made me spray GF's perfume. I think I smelt like hell.
