Water Pump...any specific advice?
Changing out my water pump next week. Pretty straight forward job, but just to be on the safe side.....is there anything I need to look out for?
Thanks Fellas! |
Dont over torque the bolts :). They snap easy.............

When you remove the pump, the housing to block gasket will usually crack loose.
Go ahead & pull the pump housing & inspect it for abnormal erosion. Check the edges of the bypass port under where the stat sits to see if the disc on the bottom of the stat covers the hole. Look for erosion of the small bleed hole in the wall between the inlet & outlet chambers. I use gray RTV to seal the gaskets on re-assembly. |
And don't lose the shims on the studs for the housing! 2 of 'em...

When I took mine off, the housing gasket came loose too and found out that the gasket didn't come with the pump. I would go ahead and get one on hand just in case. The gasket is small and seems that it costs less than $5.
Be careful around the OMP lines. I had to disconnect mine to get my pump out but have read that some people are able to get it off without messing with the lines. Good luck on the replacement. |
If you get a rebuilt or remanufactured one, do yourself a favor and paint the outside of it before putting it on. If you install a cast iron or cast steel or whatever, it will rust up and get really ugly in a matter of weeks. Or days maybe, can't remember on mine but it looks like crap now. I'm almost ready to pull it back off to clean it up a bit.
