Wastegate porting...yes i searched!

Alright..i cant find anything on this! Im getting my wastegate ported tommorow(dont have tools to do it myself...) anyways...a machine shop is going to do it..i heard from someone there is a front side..and a backside to it? True? Do i just need to run a drill bit though the size i want and then weld the new washer on and call it a day? Do i need to take the Exhaust housing off to do this? Anyhelp/pics would be great. 2.5 inch intake,3 inch exhaust, greddy fmic, microtech,12psi. Is a 35mm port big enough?

Jigsaw 08-24-06 01:58 AM

How much are you getting it done for?

eriksseven 08-24-06 02:25 AM

Just remove the back-plate of the turbo. There are two bolts holding it in place. Then remove the WG actuator-arm 'clip' and pop the arm off to free the WG "door".

35mm should be more than enough... BTW, it should seriously take them less than an hour.

slpin 08-24-06 03:24 AM

backplate??? wouldnt it be better to just take off the whole hot side...
because if you do... it is 6 bolts... and 2 circle thingys on s5 or 3 little half thingys on the s4...

You'll need to take the exhaust housing off if you're having it machined. Even if you were doing it by hand it would be foolish to leave the housing in the turbo.

This explains how to remove the exhaust housing: https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...chmentid=76207

Here's mine: https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generation-specific-1986-1992-17/serious-s4-wastegate-porting%85-343788/ (scroll down to post #15 for reposted pics)

I know this is sort of thread-jacking, but I just wanted to ask, how much does wastegate porting cost, usually?

The Wankler 08-24-06 08:48 AM

I think I spent $45.00

Dom_C 08-24-06 08:55 AM

if you port it too big your boost will fall off really badly uptop. I have mine ported to the limit of the stock flapper and it will hold 5psi all the way up to like 6k and then will go up to like 7psi at the most by redline. This isn't just taking a drill and making a bigger hole though. I removed alot of metal to make it flow better instead of just making it huge. With this setup I can hold boost all the way to redline with no falling off. On my old setup when I had it ported to like 35mm with a washer welded on boost would fall to like 7psi by redline, it sucked.

Did you do it yourself? Or got it done? If you did it by yourself, how much to get it done?

The Wankler 08-24-06 09:51 AM

no, I had it done at a machine shop up here. I followed NZ's advice. I can hit 11psi no prob all the way up to 7k. Have not tried further yet. I have hit up top 15psi but that was before I got my Profec 2 under control. Here is a pic.
Look torwards the bottom.

Welp im in for it. I went to one machine shop..they looked at it and laughed. Refeered me to another..went there..he gave me a quote of 250$ to do it and it wouldnt be done by the time i need it to be. (saturday for the steve kan tuning session). I have an electric dremel..and a high powered drill. So i am prepared to spend a few hours of my night porting this wastegate. I have no other choice unfortunatly..wish me luck :(

The Wankler 08-24-06 04:26 PM

JWteknix 08-24-06 04:54 PM

Print out the photos from my thread and show them what I had done. I was charged for one hour of labour (NZ$70, ~US$45) because that's all it took.

Note that once it's machined you still need to do some work backcutting the port (preferably with a die grinder) to get it flowing smoothly. Just making the hole bigger is not enough.
