Very VERY thin oil
 

Hey guys, I just got back from work.. . on the way back from work, i noticed my oil pressure was down VERY low.. like below 30.. this is very surprising to me because right now my sensor is broke, and my pressure is normally pegged at a 90 degree angle.. either who, i pulled off at a McD's to check my oil, and i see that it's low (down to the bottom line), and that it's VERY thing..

It smells greatly of gas, and it has the consistancy of water. Now that I think about it, it was rather thin when i changed it last time (about 1k miles ago).

any good ideas as to why this is?

um.. i doesn't flood.. or hasn't flooded in at least 6 monthish.. all summer anywho.. do you you think someting about the injectors perhaps?

Do you have warm start problems? Like after you've been driving around for a good time and you shut the car off for 15 mins and start it, does it start worse than cold? That's a good indication of leaky injectors. Also, you can try removing them from the motor (but still plugged in) and turn the ignition on like you are started it and you can see if any of the patterns are wrong or some may flow more than others. Try putting vials under the injectors when you do this so that you can measure the exact amount that each is spraying. Don't know if injectors could leak enough to cause thin oil but possibly..

no, everytime i turn the key, it starts right up.. it runs like a champ for a 200 dollar car :) i haven't removed injectors before, it doesn't take too long, does it? (i know i can do it w/ my haynes book)

Call Mazda and ask them what the labor time is to remove and install new injectors. They should have that information in a book for you. The time in the book is for an experienced tech that has done it before. So expect to add at least 30-60 mins to that time if you've never done it before. I have never done it so I don't know how long it would take.

But anyways, it could be something else leaking fuel into the oil but I am no expert.

Hhmmm.. does you car smoke at all? if so, you might have bad/going oil seals and could be leaking gas in the oil. Accually, im just making shit up.... i think, i dunno

it smokes a bit on startup.. nothing serious.

all good ideas. but have you changed your oil lately?? withing 3k miles of an oil change, this will be common on a rotary. it is due to the lubrication system as well as possibly leaky injectors. ask almost anyone, they will say they have the same problem.. just change your oil every 2-2500 miles and you will be just fine... i did it for a year like that and beat on my old car every day!

once again if you do a search, you will see this is VERY common for a rotary.

well, the oil was only changed about 1000 miles ago. this is why i'm concerned... I did search, but nothing relevant to me came up.

I ran into this problem with a first gen. The car ran fine, and actually the oil pressure would read acceptable when the engine was running. When the oil was changed it would have the consistency of water. Occasionally, there would be a hot starting problem, but the car would always start. Upon tear down it was apparent that the rotor side seals were not within spec and were allowing blow-by to contaminate the oil that thrashes around and cools the rotors - I would imagine that after a short time the oil would loose its consistency due to this contamination. I noticed that the engine lacked power at high RPM. Hope this helps you!

What weight oil?

Does sound like a fuel/flooding issue. Hopefully it isn't anything serious. But, expect the worst, hope for the best.

You may be a candidate for snake oil.

thanks guys... I'm guessing Ihookituuup has the right idea, since i'm losing a lot of oil out of somewhere, also... either who.. this winter the whole car is going down for a rebuild.. Prolly time to just let her sit so I don't damage anything..

Use the Lucas. This way, when your engine dies, you can file a complaint with the FTC and sue Lucas for engine wear, leakage, damage, whatever. Lucas is suppose to fix everything according to their product info.

Is this on stock or ported engine?

haha, I dunno, i hear bad thigns about lucas (insert british car joke here).

ReTed - Should be stock, I would think.. (The car has 205,000 when i got it).. I'm going to probably be rebuilding it here, so i'll find out I guess :)
