VDI and Heater Unit removal?
Im taking apart my FC but Im stuck on the VDI and the Heater Unit as its mentioned in the Haynes manual. I removed 7 bolts and everything attached from the VDI that I can see but it wont lift off. Its still firmly on there. I removed the bolts and connectors from the heater unit behind the dash but it wont come out. What else is there to remove which Im probably missing?https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...080d7e9efd.jpg

Have you tried to break loose the heater hoses? There should be 2 rubber heater hoses clamped to beaded fittings at the back of the unit. If they're old, they're probably crusted and baked on. If you're going to replace the hoses, just cut the rubber hoses and your heater unit should come loose.
On a separate note, where did you find that Turbo II pic on your profile? That's pretty cool. |

Ok got the heater unit out. Hoses were on there good and a few screws and bolts to take out. Now onto the VDI and find why its not budging.

Glad you got it out. I don't know anything about the VDI stuff to help you though.
Do you have a hi-res version of that pic that I could use for the background on my computer? |
On the VDI, on the passenger side of the engine there should be a series of nuts and 1 bolt holding it on there. On the other side are 2 vertical 12mm bolts that hold the manifold to the metal vacuum tube rack, they should just need to be loosened so it can slide up (they fit into a slot).
The one bolt on the passenger side is kind of under the fuel rail and I almost missed it when I took the same deal apart yesterday. Once that's all done the gasket will typically be pretty stuck, you will have to pry a bit to get it to break loose. Be careful, there is a big difference between prying against the gasket and still having a bolt holding everything down. Dale |
Looks like the hoses are still in pretty good shape considering that they're probably the original hoses.

I got the VDI off earlier. Dale you were right about the bolt under the fuel rail. I thought you meant the one under the hose to the rail but it was just that one long bolt. I missed it because I thought the bolt head was a big piece of dirt/debris and blended in well. So its all done with. Thanks guys I appreciate the help. |
