vacum leak
 

hey, i just bought my first 7 last night, its a 91 n/a . the car runs and dosent stall when i start it, my friend test drove it and he said i was stupid to buy it because theres a vacum leak. is there an easy soultion to this? would a rebuild fix this problem aswell?

You generally won't need a rebuild to fix a vacuum leak... Also, how did your friend determine there was a vacuum leak?

See if you can find where exactly it's leaking. A hose could have split, or come off a nipple. I believe you spray carb cleaner around various connections and hoses, and if the engine speed changes, you've found a leak.

Most likely, a hose has split or come off - they're cheap to replace.

haha, im guessing your friend doesnt drive a rotary, vac leaks are usually easy to find. you can usualy hear the hissing if the vac line came off, if not just check all the clamps to make sure they are there and then check all the vac lines connected to the metal lines coming out from under the intake, there are a lot of them.

Obviously your friend is stupid and doesn't know anything about cars.
How does he come to the conclusion that it has a vacuum leak by just driving it?? If it holds idle steady it's fine.
I think he's just jealous.

haha well he dose own an fc aswell, and for awhile i might add, but i was thinking of the rebuild anyways = P anywho ill give it a try haha thx

oo i forgot to mention, the idle dose this burrp,burrp,burrp thing which freaked my mom out haha, but my friend said that its near impossible to fix a vacuum leak since theres hundreds of them all over the car left and right.

ya, its not hard. and even if you do the rebuild, you still have to fix the vac leak

Yea, your friend knows nothing about rotaries or his FC.
There aren't hundreds. A few yes, not hundreds. Use the search button for idle and there should be several pages. Can be anything from a popped off vacuum hose to dirty injectors. Well, if it does that "burrp" thing now and then it just needs tuning . Change your plugs and change all the fluids which something every used car owner should do.
What you can do is get a carb cleaner spray can and spray the vacuum hoses. When the idle changes that's where it is. If the vacuum lines are still original, you should change them while you're changing fluids. It's not hard and it's preventive maintenance.

hundreds of vacuum leaks huh? Tell Mr. Wizard to get fucked. Use some starting fluid/carb. cleaner, etc. to spray around your vacuum hoses and rubber nipples, as well as your UIM to LIM gasket areas, etc. If your idle changes, that usually means there is a vacuum leak in that area.

I picked up a universal vacuum hose kit from Pep Boys for $20. You could purchase that, and re-do all of your vacuum lines, as well as replace all of the rubber nipples, and that should help or even take care of any vacuum leak problems. You may also want to consider removing your rat's nest at the same time, search the forum, there are write ups with pictures detailing this procedure.

Congrats. on your FC. If "vacuum leaks" are your only problem, it sounds like you got a damn god buy.
