V8 Rx7 Want One

DOES N E ONE KNOW NE WHO HAS PUT A V8 INTO AN RX7 WHAT TYPE V8 WAS IT

racerfoo 08-08-01 10:32 PM

http://www.grannysspeedshop.com/

they got all kinds of kits for v8 swaps, and have pics and stuff of people that have done it. im thinking about doing the same myself...if i decide to i'll post as i go to help anyone else who wants to do it too

RXTASY1 08-08-01 10:38 PM

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!!! WHY!!!????

racerfoo 08-08-01 10:42 PM

dude, if its a GXL, its not gonna be all that fast unless you put a ton of money into it. you can get a chevy small block for cheap at car swap meets and stuff and the kits arent that much either. plus, its going to be pretty freaking fast and only weigh like 150 pounds more. more reliable too, and people will piss their pants when they hear you pull up

racerfoo 08-08-01 10:43 PM

oh btw, i said gxl cause thats what i have, i dunno what that other dude has, but the gxl engine probably needs a rebuild, so a v8 conversion would be probably same price.

Cheap ass power. I'd do it if I were motivated. I love the sound of a high lift cam and 1.6:1 roller rockers at idle. :)

thanx for that link I was gonna put in a TII engine in my 88 NA but now Im just gonna go for the V8 power and I could turbocharge it and still have it be cheaper then the TII. thanx again for the link

Ever had a high power rotary?

Didn't think so. Better have deep pockets.

lets not start thins shit again.

Your right, but that doesn't change my statement. Besides, my comments are somewhat tounge-in-cheek. I dont really care what people do, but I will still tell them that a V8 in an RX-7 is a dumb idea. I don't really care about how much horsepower you can get for $500 with a V8 or how it doesn't even mess with the weight distribution (highly unlikely). I have owned a couple of Ford's with 351 V8s and loved those cars and their engines, but I would never wish one for an RX-7. An RX-7 has something unique, something that no other mass production car has, and that is a rotary engine. Mazda built a wonderful car to be home for the rotary. A car that could effectively demonstrate what a rotary has the potential to do. I truthfully believe that the rotary design is superior to piston design. I believe that if the rotary has had as much development as its piston counterpart, that it would be such a superior engine, only an idiot would want a piston engine. Anyway, that is not the case now, but still I believe that it is disrespecting the rotary to place a V8 in its home. The rotary may not be the most practical or powerful engine around, but it is, in my opinion, the best. But to each his own and if you want to put a V8 in, go ahead with that ghetto shit. :)

Agent_D 08-09-01 03:13 AM

i totally agree with masterrx on this :) the rx-7 is the rotaries home, yea its expensive to make them powerful but consider, their 1.3litres, v8's are like 4 to 7 or 8 litres or somethin. and actually you can keep the cost down on stuff for making power in the rotary, i had about 300 dollars in a black rx that is now dead, it did 0-60 in 6 seconds flat at 5500ft above sea level, 85 degrees. yea if you wanna go with the v8, its your deal, also agreed, ghetto shit :) lol

MasteRX 08-09-01 03:18 AM

Thank you Agent_D. I knew there was some sense on this board somewhere. :bigthumb:

Putting a V8 in an RX-7 is like putting one in a Miata. It can be done, but it's not really an RX-7/Miata anymore.

I guess you'd have to call it an MX-7.

If you do it, please at least keep with a manual transmission.

Saying that is like saying 2 stroke engines are better than 4 stroke engines....Well they are and they aren't. The same is with rotarys. They are better in some ways (simpler) and worse in others (no low RPM torque). Less maintanace, Never had to change a timing belt or adjust the valves on MY RX.

I like my rotary but I realize it has limitations. It is not a dragster and was not designed as one. If someone wants to make it into a dragster by adding a V-8 well....

My question is Why such low tech crap. The engines I have seen put in had a carb on it. Swore I would never own a car with a carb since I sold my '77 200SX. Why doesn't anyone put in some nice engines instead of the crappy american pushrod V-8's!!!!!:0

lesd 08-09-01 12:45 PM

I agree with the carb. stuff, I'll never have another carb engine on a car. People doing the FD's like me are using late model engines. Direct port F.I. , in my case(s) with mass air flow meters.

My single turbo engine was fast, but blew way too fast for the money. All my fondness and respect went out the window when I got that dreaded bad idle after racing and loosing too a 2000 camaro z28. I don't think he was stock to beat me, but I still lost that one, as well as the motor in my car.
Next time he sees my Yellow FD, I'll be sporting HIS engine, an LS1.

I have never ridden in a V8 powered rx7. 99.999 % of the people on this forum have not either. We should all reserve the lambasting of the conversions until we see one, and see if the merits outweigh the negatives, IMHO.

mazdaspeed7 08-09-01 04:19 PM

Totally off-topic, but is the LS1 overhead cam or pushrod?

Dyre 08-09-01 05:28 PM

Good-old Pushrods MazdaSpeed-

soul assassin 08-09-01 06:13 PM

i agree with master rx also. you want a v8 buy an old camaro or just an american car for christ sake

gr0undz3r0 08-09-01 06:14 PM

thats a great idea

V8 in RX7. The thought of it makes me choke. But it will be funny when you work for months in pure anger at all that said it wouldn't work just to take it to the strip and get whipped my a real RX7. I hope its me.....
:D

topless7 08-09-01 06:32 PM

If I were to do a V8 conversion, It would have to be in a Fiero GT. They make a ton of kits and having a rear engine V8 would be different. There are also a lot of sweet bodykits for them. Next would be an older Nissan 240/280Z.

hehehe... i guess that would be funny wouldn't it? Except I wouldn't just have the engine by itself as the power I'd use the money I saved on the cheap base power to increase the overall power and blow right by you in the 1/4
